Which insurance companies recognise IAM (Advanced driving test)?

ES (18) will have been driving a year in October and a month ago also passed his IAM Advanced driving test. He has owned his car since a week after passing (Oct 2008) and been insured 3rd party on it (W reg Corsa).

As ES is off to Uni in September, he will probably sell his car and as he has passed his Advanced test, I have agreed to insure him on my 1 yr old Mini One, so he has something to drive during the holidays etc.

I have rang my insurance today and a couple of others - my insurance (elephant) has knocked off £30 and the others said they didn't recognise it........so whilst ES has gained experience in safe driving and some fantastic driving knowledge, which was the point of taking it, I am somewhat disappointed that insurance companies do not recognise the qualification or do so for only a small amount.......or have I just not contacted the correct companies?!

Because of the age of my car, he would need to be fully comp and I was hoping to save a little off the going rate if possible.

Any help appreciated. :D

You will probably find that you can get cheaper insurance by shopping around/using cashback sites rather than just relying on the IAM discount some companies allow.

When I was a member I tried a few who were supposed to give discount, but even if they do it doesn't make them the cheapest.

The fact he has passed IAM should mean he is less liekly to have an accident so he should build up a NCB quickly and save himself money that way.

Many insurers broker policies will give this discount, though, as stated above, it is more important to find one who is competitive for you anyway.

You might be better/cheaper subsidising his bus/taxi fares. As a student he will probably like a shandy?

Thanks guys - I will concentrate on finding the best deal regardless - I was just surprised that monetary wise, passing the adv test doesn't make any difference!

It is for when he comes home from Uni and wants use of a car for meeting up with friends or going places. Not much point in passing both his test and advanced one if he doesn't have the ability to drive....and there is no probably in liking a shandy only a definite.;)

It should be possible to add him to your policy as a temporary named driver just for the holidays as and when he needs it.

Thanks for that - I have just rang my insurance company (again!) and they have advised that he can be added for a minimum of 7 days for £24.15 per week, so that would be for weekends too. The only flip side is that if he was on my insurance he MAY have been able to earn no claims, however being on temporarily he defintely wouldn't.

He would have to be on the policy for the whole policy year to "earn" a named driver ncd (if your company offers it), and NCD for named drivers is a bit of a marketing exercise. (The named driver would have to take out insurance in future with the same insurer).
