  • No risk of redundancy in my profession and I'd be pretty unlucky to become sick for 3 years. Got to be better to pay off quickly than pay £160 at least a month for 13 years.

Well you can make the overpayments by DD as if it were a commercial loan without taking on any of the liability in case of illness, redundancy etc.

You cannot make overpayments via Direct Debit. If you were considering an overpayment this would need to be via Standing Order

Can anyone give me some advice on my OH's student loan, we started paying by DD in January, we made four payments and then got a settlement figure which was less than the DD amount so we paid this by card and cancelled the DD. As far as we were concerned the matter was done and dusted.

Today we got his student loan statement saying he still owes over £300, only 1 direct debit is showing and the card payment is not showing at all. The missing DD's are all from the period supposed to be shown on this statement. His online statement now says he has an outstanding balance of £173. But viewing the correspondence they have been sending letters to an address he has not lived at for 5 years about the cancelled direct debit and recently sent one saying they are going to start collecting his debt through the tax system again! They clearly have the correct address as the statement came straight here. If I deduct his missing payments from the outstanding balance on the statement it turns out he owes 63p.

Any ideas what this useless bunch are up to?

You need to talk to somebody on the phone and go through the situation clearly and concisely.

It is hard for us to make a comment on what is going on given that the direct debit does not appear to have been taken therefore leaving a balance owed.

Thanks Poolie, he's going to ring them on Monday, I've printed out the bank statements showing the DD's and also the extra card payment we made. I just hope they don't start direct deducting from his salary again.

You can! You can set it up on the studentloanrepayments site. They were very keen I pay by DD when I had an overpayment to repay. As you say, you can also pay by standing order and also a one off BACS payment as it suits you.

  • Hi!

I am an european student who took a student loan for 3,375 in 2009 too, just to complete the third year of my degree, since the two first years were taken in my university.
However, after finishing the degree I came back to my home country and given the current situation I havent been able to work yet, so I have been taking courses and further education to enhance my skills and CV.
I am a bit concerned regarding the repayment plan; what happens if in the following 2-3 years I am unable to find a work which pays over 15k? That would mean over 18k in EURO currency, which is unlikely to happen. Can I face any sort of legal action?

    Thanks,

    Thanks,

Have you kept the Student Loan Company informed of your address and circumstances?
Providing you keep your details with the SLC up to date you won't be required to repay your loans until your income reaches the repayment threshold for the country you are in.
You can face legal action if you do not keep the SLC informed.

Have ds just started uni. Grandmother drops into conversation at the weekend that she has left him some money when she dies. Its a fair amount £50k. Would this be classed as income for that year.
    ALSO
ds2 will be in the same position however he gets some compensation money when he is 22. Is this classed as income.
