    Hi,

I have a customer reference number on my old statement, but that's it. No password or online account. Guess I'll have to ring next week.

    Thanks.

  • So what is the 'Monthly Default Repayment Amount' in aid of?

    and another question,

Are the SLC allowed to sell your loan on? and if so for what reasons? ie, could this happen as I'm moving abroad?

    Thanks

As it explains in the reference I gave, that's the monthly amount that you owe if you don't tell them that you're living abroad. It's presumably the basis on which the amount of money you owe has been calculated from your last stint abroad when you didn't tell them you were out of the country.

I believe that the SLC can sell your debt on if you default on payments but this won't happen if you tell them when you are abroad and keep them notified when you return to the UK.

The Sale of Student Loan Act will allow Student Loans to sell anybodys loan onto a third party. BUT!!! What will happen is that Student Loans will carry on the administration while the debt is owned by a third party so you will still deal with Student Loans Company directly.
  • Had a letter from Student Loan Company today. I am not working or in receipt of state benefit which they confirm as obviously they liase with HMRC.
But they have asked for a lot of information:
    1. What my employment status is (fine this is 'Unemployed')
    2. Evidence of how I financially support myself! I am married and thus rely on my husband. What kind of proof are they expecting? Hopefully just a statement to this effect? What kind of proof can they legally request? My husband would not be impressed if he had to provide payslips, bank statements that kind of thing.......Can they make him if I cant?
    3. Contact details including home telephone number, mobile telephone number, e-mail address. Am I obliged to provide these details? Seems a bit intrusive to me.

If anyone could advise (who has some robust knowledge - please dont guess!), that would be appreciated
    Thanks

Since you are not working you should makr it as unemployed and also get your husband to write a letter stating that he is supporting you.

Your husband is not expected to prove what his income is or anything.

They are wanting to make sure they have the correct contact details as these are used as part of the security checks when you call.
  • Hi Poolie

    Thanks for the reply :-)

So I dont have to provide the contact details then? For security, my date of birth, national insurance number, customer reference and address details should surely be enough to confirm who I say I am if/when I call?

I have just stated on the form that I am married and my spouse is financially supporting me. They can write again to request the specific evidence (letter from him or whatever) of this if they want. They should be specific as to what they want from the outset. They enclose a booklet but it gives no information as to what 'evidence' they expect for anything.

If the details have not changed then you do not need to provide them again.

I would NOT send the form back with the note on it. It is the first thing that will annoy the staff (trust me I used to work in that department - I don't work for SLC now so can comment) as all they are doing it sending it straight back.

It is quicker and easier for your husband to write a quick letter standing he is supporting you and get the work done so you don't get the whole lot back with a sheet which will not tell you what you need exactly!
  • Annoy the staff? Surely if they want something specific they should ask for something specific. Doesnt seem too much to expect to me. If they are 'annoyed' I'm not telepathic then thats entirely up to them.

Send the form in without the note if you want, but I am warning you that you will end up with the form back in the future wanting more information on how you are supporting yourself.
