As you are London based have you tried to find a local freegan group ? Might be no help at all but worth a go??
Do you have a local farm shop/ veg box scheme that could maybe help with past it's best stuff ?

Also buy lentils.. Yellow /red lentils make a great soup, curry, burger, meat (free) loaf etc and they are very very cheap..Also chick peas and butter beans.

  • Good cheap fillers :
Porridge oats in the morning boosts your mood during the day due to slow release of blood sugar and fills you up for ages.
Tinned sardines in oil or tomato sauce (cheap in Asda or Aldi)does the same,
    Eggs , the same.
    Bananas,
    Brazil nuts
    Walnuts
    Peanut butter sarnies
    Cheese sarnies
Baked beans (BRANSTON are cheaper) (in packs of 4)

Keep your bread in the fridge to keep it fresh for as long as possible.
Stock up on potatoes some leeks & onions & Knorr chicken stock cubes, red lentils & macaroni or spaghetti.
Chop the potatoes & leeks small & cook with some chicken stock to make a batch of soup.
Mash your potatoes and mix with cheese to make a batch of savoury cheese pie.
Microwave your potaoes & serve with grated cheese or tuna.
Mash your potatoes with fried onions & grated cheese and turn them into rissoles, frying them until crispy brown.
Lentils, onions & other mixed veg will make a filling soup. You can also use them to stretch some minced beef & tinned tomatoes to make a double batch of bolognese sauce. Next day add some red kidney beans & chilli to turn into chile con carne.
If you belong to a library, browse through their cookery books section. You'll probably get lots of ideas for cheap economical meals.
  • if its just for you that should be do able, shop wise, make a meal plan, bulk cook and bulk out (like cook a pack of mince with lentils, onion, mushrooms ,carrots, oats etc or what mixed veg you have, then use this to make a few different meals like cottage vpie, spag bol, lasagna, chilli, stew, pasties, pies, with mash etc)
make some homemade biscuits and cakes if you can for treats, buy basic, shop end of day for reduce items but only buy if you can use or freeze, things like reduced blueberries/strawberries/bananas etc are great to freeze to go in smoothys/baking/porridge etc. pulse etc are great for you and cheap! perfect for stretching soups and stews, f&v stall sell old veg for pets if it looks ok make a soup with it, butchers normally let you have bones for stock for next to nothing. hth x

yes, that is definately, that's my food budget for a normal month for me!

As others have said, shop around to make sure you're getting the best prices for things, and bulk cooking things is great.
People have already suggested great ideas, but PM me if you need inspiration...I'm used to stretching my food budget!

  • yes absolutely doable, as OH and I eat like kings & Queens on £75 a month for two of us, which is only £7.50 per person more than £30.

If you're feeling brave enough, I can recommend rabbit stew high enough. Also focus on basic ingredients that you can make into many things (pasta, mince, etc) and have fun substituting ingredients (I often cube up some gammon and use that as bacon bits - can't really tell the difference once fried up)

I wish you lots of good luck, you will learn so much in the month that hopefully, you'll look back on this month as a positive experience :)
  • Definitely use the milk and more if you can as that is milk, cheese and bread for 'free' :) (i used it myself and got my delivery on sat just gone) - pop to lidl for a cucumber 29p (if you like them) and that is your lunches sorted....tuna sarnies or cheese with cucumber (freeze some for next week) and also some milk for tea (teabags are 28p for value ones)

Tesco value potatoes are 99p for 2.5kg and some value coleslaw for tuna/cheese n coleslaw jackets (with some frozen veg you have) will be a healthy and yummy dinner..... Or eggs to make omlette with HM chips - oil in poundland for £1.....

Pasta (bag is 44p ish) with tinned tomatoes (netto has 5 tins for £1 right now...) tuna and cheese??

Porridge 75p in tesco for massive bag that would prob last you the entire month!!!! We make it with water and a bag of sugar 68p - i like sugar :)

Also some tinned fruit for snacking on......

Have fun and browse mysupermarket - also tesco clubcard vouchers due nov..... maybe if you have any you could use those to top-up your food shop :)
DFW since JAN 2009 - 2014 will be the year i finally clear debts :) Just to see which month :))))
