Uninstalled McAfee virus scan = pc dead

Can anyone shed any light onto why this happened?

Had a 30 day trial of mcAfee virus scan, it ended today, so i uninstalled it, then downloaded AVG.

McAfee told me to re start the pc to finish uninstalling, so i did.

It stopped the pc from working altogether then, wouldn't even load to the vista screen.

My OH had to phone his friend as it was saying U something was missing, had to press F8 to load it in safe mode and back date the pc to yesterday when it worked.

What on earth uninstalled along with McAfee to make it not work?

Hmmm....It should not have uninstalled something to stop Vista from loading?

What you should have done is to uninstall Mcafee from add or remove programs and restarted your computer then goto here.......

    http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507

And download the McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool (MCPR.exe), run that and restart and only then download AVG.

Maybe you have a conflict between what remains of Mcafee and AVG?

    use the removal tool

    Step 2 - Download and run MCPR.exe
    1. Download the removal tool from:

      http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe
    2. Click Save and save the file to a folder on your computer.
    3. Navigate to the folder where the file was saved.
    4. Make sure all McAfee windows are closed.
    5. Double-click MCPR.exe to run the removal tool.

Note: Windows Vista users must right-click MCPR.exe and select Run as Administrator.

I did uninstall McAfee from add/remove programs. Re started the pc like it told me and it just never re started, loaded to our start screen as it ASUS thats the name of the tower and just stayed saying that, would not go any further.

Turned the pc on/off like 7 times and it just wouldn't load any further than this. Then OH did something (don't know what) and it started saying N (sorry not U like in OP) something was missing.

This when my OH phoned his friend, who said press F8 and then the pc loaded as normal.

We re started and it loaded again with saying N ..... was missing. So back dated it to yesterday.

Soooo scary cos it was myself who uninstalled it and i thought id ruined the pc.

Is it possible you had some aspects of Mcafee still running in the background when you uninstalled it?

Anyway try the Mcafee removal tool (MCPR.exe) to remove any thing that is left behind.
  • I didn't have the opportunity to try the McAfee removal tool, it only let me uninstall it from the add/remove program list, re started it after uninstall like it said, boom pc dead.

Like said above only got the pc working again with OH phoning his mate who knows stuff about pcs and back dating it to the day before.

I was just after an explanation for why i lost the pc altogether with simply just uninstalling McAfee.

What i find interesting though, is since we back dated and did what you've all mentioned above, we've since put Norton on and now the internet connection stays on all the time.

Since we had the 30 day free trial of McAfee the internet every day had a least 3 'limited connection' espiodes, at which id have to unplug the moderm for a few secs, plug it back in to get full connection again.

I was ready for phoning my internet provider for them to come out and have a look at the connection.
