Home Cinema: How to connect Phono amp to bare wire clamp subwoofer?

I have a sony 5.1 amp which has phono output for the subwoofer, however my mordaunt short ms308 sub has bare wire clamp. It is possible to connect this up with some sort of convertor?

Is there not a phono input (or a stereo pair of them) labelled Line In?

Just get a phono to bare wire lead, or chop off one end strip the insulation and wire up, get the polarity right or the sound won't be very good.
  • Providing the Sony output is powered and the sub is unpowered AND the impedances are rated to be compatible there is no reason why you cant chop off the plug on one end of an RCA cable and use that. You would be better off using speaker cable tho and terminating one end.

You say the sony has a phono (RCA) output, these are usually found on line level outputs (un-amplified) and the cable termination blocks indicate that your sub does not have an amplifer in it, so I think it would be worth checking these points before you make any connections.

Yes there are Line In phono. I intially connected this up but no sound so I thought this was not working. However I just found out the subwoofer was disabled on the amp! Enabled it and connected with phono2phono and working fine. Thanks guys.

The phono outputs of the amp would be unamplified, and would go to a powered, amplified subwoofer. The bare wire input of the sub was expecting an amplified signal.
