Question about credit card charge reclaiming

Hi,
I have 2 credit cards that i have not made any payments on for approx a year now, owing to financial difficulties.
I now have the money to pay off the full balance on both cards.
Obviously i have been charged many times over the last year (and a few times before that!).
My question is. Do i pay off the card and then claim back the charges or do i claim first ie will they remove them from the outstanding balance ?
Im not sure what to do, especially as the most recent charges i have not actually 'paid' they have just been added to my outstanding balance.
As i plan to ask each card to 'settle' for a one-off payment smaller than the balance i wonder if i can get the charges removed first.
Thank you for any advice!

If you are settling credit cards for less than 100% of the balance owed then the credit card company have the right to offset any amount of charges against any amount outstanding if you settle prior to claiming the charges back.
I have not worked for NatWest Bank since February 2009
