The penalty you mention is a non-endorsable motoring offence, so technically code N covers this. Normally, code N is a £30 fine but seat belt offences have recently increased and it seems that the website hasn't been updated to reflect this. In other words, there are now code N £30 fines and code N £60 fines.

You are absolutely right :T. The ticket states non-endorsable but for £60. No wonder I was confused. Now, to decide what to do

Yes I did. It was my son in the back seat that the officer spotted without wearing one.

It gets weirder and weirder. I have just called the helpline and explained about being only able to pay £30 online and not the full £60. The man asked for my ticket number and said there is NO record of it on their system

He has however, said I should just send a cheque in!!!!

Either way just pay it as your lucky not to be getting points and an even more significant fine,

    And a squashed child.
  • The fine has recently gone up to £60 and it would appear that at this time, the website has not been updated to reflect this.
A policeman stopped me on the 2nd August and issued a fixed penalty fine of £60 because my son was not wearing a seatbelt in the rear seat ((shrug)).

Do you know that if you had been in a collision at 30mph with your son unrestrained behind you, that he would have seriously injured you and himself....but hey I suppose your more miffed about £60 than your child being seriously injured......

Read up on the stats on unrestrained child deaths and the impact that dealing with a childs body has on the families and emergency services..maybe £60 won't seem so important then....

My son is only 9 months old. He was sitting in his child seat but began bawling. My husband got in the back, lifted him out of his seat on to his lap to pacify the child when the officer pounced.

Hope this clarifies the situation. Thank you.

Ps My original query has been answered and dealt with so I will no longer visit this thread - thanks everybody for their help :T

Lucky for your son that they did.

Hopefully, you have learned a lesson? Albeit an expensive one.
  • Absolutely stupid to take a baby out his/her child seat to pacify them.....see the below news story....the child did not survive and I know the emergency services that had to deal with this...all for the sake of not pulling over.....
