but it is always necessary to ring trading standards or the CAB first...

Why is it? Going to TS or the CAB should be a LAST resort, when you have exhausted all other avenues.

No wonder it can takes weeks to get appointments at the CAB if everyone is going there first, when other remedies can be progressed...
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

No because if do not follow correct procedure you invalidate any hope of a claim in the small claims court should it come to that, are you assuming that everyone knows everything about legal procedures...???

I didn't know about them and that's why I went to trading standards, you can't go in there unless you know on what grounds you have rights to complain, there isn't one simple goods and services act and therefore when you complain you have to state under which act you are complaining under...As for using up appointment time with Trading Standards our Trading Standards give advice by phone only and they have an intermediary that you have to ring beforehand....so I haven't used up their time...

When you complain you don't have to state under which act you are complaining under at all, you simply complain. Most retailers/shops don't know the relevant Acts themselves, so needing a concise knowledge of all goods/services acts is irrelevant.

You go into shop, say I'm not happy with goods/service and ask them resolve the issue:

    1) If they offer to resolve, then give them the opportunity to and see what happens. If this doesn't resolve the issue, THEN you go to TS or the CAB.

    2) If they REFUSE to help, THEN you go to TS or the CAB.

    It's as simple as that...

In this case we don't know if they said something when they left the shop it isn't clear, in our case did say something before we left the shop but as I said sometimes the damage doesn't become clear until later.....It is always worth ringing for advice as sometimes people aren't always as clued up on things...I did in my case go back to the shop but only to say I had no confidence in her correcting things which I didn't know you could do until I spoke to trading standards...I mean I didn't want to give her another try as she had badly damaged my dress for her to make it even worst....Without trading standards I wouldn't have known which way to proceed, it's not always as clear cut as you think...
  • If I had picked up a dress of that importance I would have tried it on before I left the shop and if I noticed faults with the alterations I would have insisted it was rectified. Also, If I had noticed lipstick then I wouldn't even have taken it home and would have insisted that the shop fix and clean the dress. Also, I wouldn't have left it so near to the wedding to pick up a dress that had been altered "just in case."

Are you sure that your friend didn't get the lipstick on the dress herself when she tried it when she got it home?
  • I think the OP is conspicuous in their absence but will stick up for them anyway.

I ordered my bridesmaid dresses form a well known shop wedding dress shop in Leeds, the bridesmaid in question travelled from Scotland for measurements. The dress was ready 2 weeks before the wedding and again the bridesmaid came down to try it on again, it didnt fit!
At this point I wouldnt have left the dress with the shop if they promised me that some world famous dress designer was going to come in and fix it and that was just the bridesamid dress.
I dont blame the bride for taking her dress away from the shop, if they have failed to do the alterations correctly in the first place then then what is the likely hood of them fixing them correctly too?
  • I think you are just being rude!
  • I rang the owner today and got a full refund for the alterations. We did highlight the alteration problems and we were told we would have to pay to fix them. My friend did NOT put the lipstick mark there herself! Thanks to those who gave me good advice and i am very disappointed with those who were clearly rude.

Clearly you have taken remarks as being rude just because people said things what you didn't want to hear  For instance the suggestion I made about the lipstick IS a possibility - it is so easy to get makeup on clothes even when the greatest care is taken.

Glad to hear you got it sorted out though.

    Hi,

I think you are being a bit harsh on the OP here ..... they only posted at 10PM last night .... your post is only 14 hours later during the day ... give them a chance!
