Holiday ideas for January please!

Hi,

I am looking to book a holiday for me and bf in january and would like ideas where we can go, this is what I am looking for..

-Somewhere warm - I hate the cold
- Somewhere with things to do - I wont want to sunbathe all day and wont really want to go out drinking
- Somewhere we can experience a bit of the local culture and food
- Not egypt or spain as I'd be worried about egypt being dangerous and just don't fancy spain.
- Not too expensive!

We will want to go for a week, any advice would be very much appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

    Hi,

    - Not egypt or spain as I'd be worried about egypt being dangerous......

where did you get that strange idea from, have you actually done any research at all?
we've been to Egypt 4 times in recent years, always for winter sun, never saw anything dangerous, no wild animals, no crime, no drunken drivers, and best of all no drunken British tourists. We tended to frequent the all-inclusive hotels favoured by the Russians...
I'd also recommend Morocco, Agadir is good, and the Canaries, Fuerteventura is probably the least touristy.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

There have been some terrorist incidents in Egypt. I have to say that i wouldn't think of it as a serious risk myself, but I can see why someone else might.

Morocco is a great suggestion. The one downside of Marakesh is difficulty in finding a bar that two unaccompanied women can just walk into. (There were however plenty of restaurants in the french quarter where we could have a bottle of wine with our meal.) I thought the local culture was interesting there, and the food was lovely. I will def go back.

Tunisa has some good adverts. I would reconsider Egypt - not for the all inclusive beach resort - doesn't sound like that is your thing - but the pyramids and maybe a Nile Cruise.

Spain wouldn't be very warm - if that was warm enough, maybe Sicily would be?
  • Hi,

Thanks for your suggestions. I've always had the idea that egypt is dangerous, plus I read various things about it being dangerous aswel as the terrorist attacks. I know we would be fine in the tourist areas but I would like to try and venture out if the touristy spots a bit more and thats what I would be worried about.

I do like the sound of morocco, has anyone been there in january?

    Thanks!

I went in October, when it was very warm during the day and slightly cooler at night. In January I understand it would still be very warm in the day, but quite cold at night.

Morocco is lovely. I'm looking forward to going back!
  • Thanks for replying Pee, was it in marakesh you stayed last time? Will you stay in the same area next time or do you plan on going somewhere different?

Tunisia - loved it but the weather can be variable and it's quite cool in the evening - jeans and jacket rather than cardi weather. Daytime it can be nice but more t-shirt and capris than shorts at that time of year.

It was Marakesh... I would like to go back there, but also Essouria on the coast (Sorry about the spelling) and Fez or Rabat.

Everything was very cheap in Morocco, so although I paid a bit more for flights, about £100, I saved money on the hotel - which was an okay standard. (Better than I expected for the money.)

I would say to take some Immodium and do not be so stupid as I was and clean your teeth with the tap water!
