Hi OP. You need to clarify, but I take paying a months rent in advance is the way to make sure the funds have cleared for when the tenancy starts......normal practice.
So for eg. I have tenants moving in on the 1st August, but they pay in advance on the 23rd July to make sure the funds are in my account by the start of August and to secure the tenancy. This therefore becomes the 1st months rent for August.
The deposit is solely for damage to the property if any, and not for rent.
Is this what you are meaning, or something else?

You won't get your first months rent paid back. It was paid in advance as normal but covers your first month in the property. You should get your deposit back, but your landlord is probably not amused that you didn't pay from 1st August until 10th August.
You owe him rent for this period. Then he can return your deposit.
Does this help?Just because you made a mistake doesn't mean you are a mistake.0

if you move in on the first of the month you pay the landlord that months rent in advance on the first.
by not paying your rent on the first of august - your landlord now has no rent for August. . So the only way he can get it is by keeping your deposit - that is what a deposit is for - and for payment for any damage you may have done
so yes the LL is entitled to keep the rent amount due from the deposit - BUT
you should have given him notice to leave at the end of the month anyway so he may be entitled to keep the lot0

Unless you have had the landlord agree otherwise your tenancy will more likely than not be on a monthly basis and you will owe rent till the end of August so he will keep the deposit. Furthermore, if you've damaged anything he may come after you for that too.0
