I have had a £5 ppi charge on my monthly barclays current account statment for years that i cant ever remember asking for or agreeing to when I call up to ask them to cancel it they say i have to send a letter to cancel or go in to a branch which i never have chance to do, how can i find out more about this charge and can i claim any of the money back?, thinking about it i have a similar charge on my halifax credit card that i cant ever remember anything about that has also been going on for years, because i cant even remember whats my first step ?

Hello and welcome.;)
In regards of PPI reclaiming, it may be worth you writing to them to request a True copy of your CCA (agreement), hopefully they still hold details on their systems/microfiche, basically as above enclose a cheque payment or postal order of a £1, tell them you look forward to receiving your agreement by 12 days from the date on your letter, and post by recorded delivery.
For your reason that PPI was added on your Credit card, this was possibly added in automatically, so personally I would give it a go at reclaiming on this, plus the interest.
They have 8 weeks in full to respond, if they do not resolve in your favour by the first letter, you should be given the opportunity to write to them again to reconsider, then you should receive the final decision, the final decision should enclose details of the financial ombudsman service (FOS), you can take your complaint to these if your not happy with the outcome.
Here below is the link, you will find useful PPI reclaiming guidelines, a mis selling checklist, and template letters, good luck.

It is recommended that you use recorded delivery for all your posting, as this is your proof of posting.
