Reclaiming Fees from Barclays - £charge??

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and hope there's someone around who can give me some advice.. I have had several Barclay accounts for years and phoned up the call centre people to request a list of charges taken from my bank accounts. When I received these lists, I could see that the fee taken from each of the accounts amounted to £10 per charge from approx 2002. That really confused me as I was fully expecting £30 charges to show up, not £10. I have absolutely no recollection of receiving letters about £10 fees being charged at all which is just weird as I usually have a great memory for that kind recollection. Unfortunately I managed to shred all my bank statement/papers going back to '98 a couple of months before I heard anything about the reclaim case  so I can't easily check the info.. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Did you receive lists or statements? Cos that £10.00 might be for a packaged account ie additions which is not reclaimable. You may be able to argue for a refund of some of these additions charges if you can prove that you would be completely ineligible for the cover, ie non car driver and roadside recovery was part of the package for example.

  • Thank you for your reply! I received lists headed 'Summary of Fees' covering 'fees and refunds' over the period requested. I'm not sure I understand what extras you mean - I only have DDs and standing orders from one of the accounts, none from the others but the charges on all the accounts show the same £10 charge under the reference 'paid referral'. When looking over the summary, I would just have expected to see some of the £30 fees that I remember clearly having received letters for - but maybe what I remember goes back to before 2002 and maybe they changed the charges from £30 to £10 from then onwards?

Does anyone know if Barclays charging structure may have changed in the past 8 years or if particularly the £10 'Paid referral' amounts (these being approx 90% of my fees) can be claimed back considering they are only slightly larger than the recommended £8 fee?

    Many thanks in advance

Did you receive copy statements or a list of charges?
Paid referral fees were £30.00 a pop if memory serves me right.
And "what recommended £8.00 fee" are you talking about?

  • I received a list of charges where the info was summarised in years (eg: 2007 - Paid Referral - Entries: 7 / Total fees: £70) When I spoke with Barclays I didn't ask for full statements as I thought that these would be charged per statement so instead I asked for the 'list of charges' - which I received in this summarised form. Did I misunderstand the cost of getting the copy statements? Can I get copy statements going back by paying £10 as it states elsewhere? I also had a discussion with Barclays as they said they could only give me information going back 6 years - I suppose this refers to the statute of limitations, but does that cover banks as well? Somewhere else on this forum someone stated that banks have a 12 year limitation period - is this correct? I am sorry for all the questions but the more I read the more confused I become - so all your good advice is very much appreciated:)

And yes, my memory says that Paid Referrals were £30 each too, but this summary of charges indicates something different and since I haven't got the original paperwork I can't check the info.

(The 'recommended £8 fee' was a reference to the amount which I thought was the amount that is viewed as being a 'reasonable' fee - pending final determination in court.)
  • Ask the bank for full copies of the statements since you need to verify why the list of charges says £10 Referral fees and the charges you were aware of is £30.00 and there is a discrepancy you want to find out about.

  • Barclays are wrong on the statement issue since they have to go back to 27th July 2001 because of the FSA Waiver on bank charges.
