Car Hire

Hi,

My first post here.

I recently got a bonus at work and have decided on a Villa holiday in Portugal as a treat for myself, OH and daughter.

Problem is a few years back I was in a lot of debt (sorted that out) so I can't have a credit card. Every place I looked at comes with car hire but I don't have a CC.

What can I do? Help please!!

I worked in the travel industry for quite a few years and your dilemma isn't unusual, brokers like https://www.suncars.co.uk normally deal with a selection of local suppliers, instead of a cc they may take a cash deposit (can be as high as 500.00 GBP though), I have reserved cars through https://www.1car1.com using my debit card . hope this helps

Thanks. Would I have to produce a CC on arrival at the location. Everytime I have hired before I needed to from Avis to Bobs Rentals.

Shouldn't do as long as the reservation agent that you make the booking with enters the dets on the booking/ res system.

I assume you have a debit card? Check with Carjet. They allow you to pay them when you book. They may also have a car supplier who will take a DC print as a guarantee on arrival.

However, I think this will be a faint hope.

I would be very wary of using a debit card overseas - other than in an ATM. If someones clones your credit card it isn't TOO much of a problem as you haven't paid for it yet - if they clone your debit card ................... !
