Laptop has developed a fault, I thought retailers had to take items back if it was within a year, not direct you to the manufacturer?

Retailer paws but sometimes its quickest route to go to manufacturer but by rights the buck stops with retailer0

If the warrenty is supplied by the manufacturer then you will need to deal with them. However under warrenty most retailers will send it off to the manufacturer on your behalf.
You do have rights under the Sale of Goods Act and if you were to make a claim under the SOGA then you would need to contact the shop you bought it from.0 -
Cheers, I'll see what they say with the manufacturer. Hope it's not gone too long!£2014 in £2014 challenge

Your first port of call is indeed with the retailer. However it's a common misconception that they are liable for a year. That's only because many manufacturers warranties are for 12 months.
The retailer under the SOGA is liable in the first 6 months to have to prove that any fault is the fault of the item owner, after 6 months and up to 6 years it's up to you to prove the item is faulty. That doesn't mean all items must last 6 years, of course.0 -

Although on a practical level, sometimes going to the manufacturer under the warranty can be easier, although you may be limiting your options so it's swings and roundabouts really! If you want to go to the manufacturer, i would definitiely tell the retailer about your problems so they are aware, this will make it easier to be able to go back to them for a remedy if the manufacturer turns out to be unhelpful.Little lady arrived 13/12/110 -
I've found this helpful - if you buy anything which attracts a warranty, read the small print, and mark a month in advance of when it'll finish in your diary or in Google calendar - http://www.google.com/intl/en-GB/googlecalendar/about.html. - just sign up for a free Google account and you're there.
