Ok seems because I've asked for Dinahs hand that I've become more protective of her. Thinking of weighing in on this one myself. Now I know I could speak to her dad openly about all of this but I think it might go belly up with her mum.

Money talks with mum ALWAYS go belly up. And you feel more like you have a right to speak, same as I feel more like I have a right to tell your mother to naff off when she criticises me.

As to the car, I'd say were pusing the cam soonish, it was last done prior to us meeting Yes, by me. Two months after we met actually. It has done less than 20k since then, we've got another 50k to go on this one. Thats depressing, I've done about 16,000 miles in a year. The engine is pretty good overall, its an alfa and its been pretty well maintained. That said the electrics are dodgier than those bobski the builder from usbekistan would do I think. Its going to need a new exhaust soon Box section only and the brakes can be a lil sluggish when they want to me Always have been, they were replaced about a year ago, but hey, its an Alfa. Just redid the hand brake cable as one of the 2 snapped. its 7 year old and will probably need other work done soon. Also it goes through power steering fluid faster than an Irishman on a pint of Guiness.

I thought we were planning on you having the alfa and me having the diesel and selling your banger - don't want my Bu now?!
I'll let herself handle the other.

Car 1 - The Alfa (Typical Alfa once one thing goes it keeps on falling apart! - See Top Gear!) - Exhaust - depends which section if cat then time to really think about running costs. Cam Belt - could be a £200 depending on if your local guy can do it or if it going to have to be a garage. The electrics is another matter. Brakes - New set of discs or pads easily purchased and fitted but again a minor pain - depends how long between changes is the main thing here. 2 years or so?

Drinking power steering fluid does not sound good especially when compared to Irishman on a pint of Guiness (No offence NIM) - sounds like a leak and surprised it did not fail its MOT due to it. MOT due by 7th September....

Car 2 - although your paying the loan repayments sounds like it is better condition.

So it's whether its worth me getting the new one (considering a volvo s40 I think it is, very economical but the interior appears to have been modelled on the inner mind of depression). Other options include basically every 4 door saloon in a diesel at over 60mpg ie 3 series, passat, possibly some form of Audi etc. 157 Alfa.....

So God never closes a door without opening a window, today I have come across details of part time lecturer positions with the OU. About £220 a month after tax for an average of 7 hours per week teaching (mostly online). I'm really interested (shame most of the really good courses don't need anyone in this area!) and think it could be a good oppertunity, so am going to look further into applying for one of the 'intro to social sciences and geog' courses.

I didnt know we were talking about petrol v diesel. OK that changes the spreadsheet slightly on cost of fuel side. The diesel will be more economical for you Dinah given the number of miles you drive each year.

Were fairly certain it aint a leak and I used the reference for a reason poolie, I'd have been offended if you didnt use it.

Theres even an intro to the law course which I would love to do. Make it seem less like my degree was a waste of time and effort.

    Thanks Gwyn :D

The lecturing Poolie? For most of the courses you choose what hours you teach ie I would probably do one saturday morning and one Tuesday evening a month, and obviously the marking, replying to emails is done from home when you want to.

Went and bought 3 wedding magazines and a Parkers guide and Living ETC at lunchtime

You can't whinge about the Parkers guide! I've only got the magazines to try to conquer the sheer sense of overwelming ineptitude I'm currently experiencing, and if you turn into one of those men I'm withdrawing my 'yes'!
