Travel Insurance Help!

Hi,

My sister has asked me to sort out her travel insurance for an upcoming trip as I travel abroad more than she does so she assumes I am an "expert"! However I am finding it very difficult to find policies that will cover her group. She is 38 and travelling with her daughter (age 7) and our mum (age 58 - shhh!) I've tried using moneysupermarket and it claims there are no policies available for that group.

I always took out annual insurance before so I'm not too sure what cover they will need. They are travelling to Walt Disney World but each part of the trip is individually booked. Their flights are with Virgin Atlantic (fully booked on credit card), accomodation is at my friend's timeshare apartment at Disney itself and Disney will transport them from the airport to the resort and back, so no hire cars. There's also no pre-existing medical conditions to deal with.

Can anyone give me some recommended insurers to try and an idea of what cover a group like that might need? Obviously DisneyWorld isn't exactly an exotic, dangerous destination but I'm well aware of US medical costs if something unexpected were to happen. I'm just a bit concerned as the two adults are very nervous/unseasoned travellers - think Mr Bean going on holiday and you've got a good idea of what will happen.

Many thanks!!

Sophie

You should be able to get a group policy no problem, but it might be cheaper to get a family policy for the Daughter and Grand Daughter, and a separate one for (shhh) Gramma.

Try direct-travel.co.uk who do group/family/singles as off the peg travel policies.
  • Hi
We went to Walt Disney World and booked our insurance through Nationwide Building Society.
They were really helpful, there were five of us - myself, DH, DS 18 years old with medical condition, DS 13 years old with different medical conditions, and nephew 18 years old. They covered us as a family group, can not remember exact cost, but wasn't more than £120 for all of us which included our pre-existing medical conditions.

easy - Advice from the "other side" let them get their own insurance - Your sister and your mum may have PEMC's that they do not wat to tell you about and you are wasting money if you do not do the declaration right and then when things go pear shaped who will they blame after they have a bill for £100,000.00+ - if THEY mess up the application, then THEy can't blame you!

Hello there, i use Nationwide quite often for holidays and have always found them great. However, if you look on the website there is a freephone number, much easier than doing it on the internet. Tell them you have been on the internet and if youre lucky and ask, they may give you the 10% internet discount.
    Good luck
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

I was with the Nationwide for years, but this year they have changed their underwriters.

My annual worldwide policy shot up from around £120-130 to almost £200 due to a PEMC. I had to call loads of places before I could find one to cover me at a reasonable cost and that was Direct Travel Insurance.
  • Hi all and thanks for the replies. Firstly, in reponse to FH Brit, I will not be filling out their application myself, I am simply looking at the different policies available and advising them which to choose. It is up to them to actually buy the insurance themselves so they can be sure they use the correct details.

I've checked out Nationwide and they are one of the most expensive policies I was quoted at over £75 for their group. Direct-Travel came in at a little under £55 for their silver package and seem to have pretty comprehensive cover excet no personal money cover - for that they'd need the gold package at just over £60, is it worth it for £500 cover? I know they will be taking mostly cash and traveller's cheques as mum doesn't like using cards for anything. I know that cover would also be upped to include personal possessions and sis will have cameras and an ipod but I believe they'd be covered by her home insurance?

Cheapest I've seen is 1stoptravelinsurance at £47.25 however I'm concerned by their policy wording which states they're not covered either directly or indirectly for anything caused by an act of terrorism. Call me pessimistic but I consider it a genuine threat these days and if they won't be covered at all on the slim chance of something happening somewhere I'd be dubious about the cover. Anyone got any thoughts on that?

EASY - great - on terorism, a lot of IC's have similar exclusions, you may find that it was just a little more obvious in their policy wording. Conssider this, you are still more liely to be run over walking to your local shops, or crash your car going to work than experience a terrorist activity, it's not like you are going to a high risk area either.

Have you tried Saga, Tesco's, Post Office? they are good policies, also Insure&Go are OK.

AVOID AXA - you may well think they are terrorists if you had to claim from them - beware they underwrite many bank policies and Marks & Spencer. Look at the very bottom of your policy documents (or bottom of policy wording if on-line) AND the claims section, if you see AXA anywhere don't buy it, you may regret it.
