Hi,
I can connect to the Internet when my Laptop is wired up, but cannot do so when using wireless. I don't alter anything other than to disconnect the ethernet cable/pcmia card and plug in a Linksys Wireless-G Notebook Adapter.
DHCP is enabled when wired and when wireless.
When I run the WLAN Network Monitor I have 100% signal/link to the modem/router but the details in the IP Configuration are very different ie
when wireless, these values come up.
Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . : Yes
Autoconfiguration IP Address. ..: 169.254.61.206
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . ...: 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . .:
I should say that another machine on the network is wireless and it works perfectly, so I assume that this is not a security issue.
Where do I start to diagnose the problem please?
TIA

I have the same problem with my laptop. It seems that they laptop supports WEP but not WPA which is annoying. As it means I have to update the firmware of my pcmcia adaptor, which I will eventually get around to doing.
Have you checked that your laptop and router are using the same encryption? As it maybe your problem too.
HTHIt could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.0 -
try ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
or do a repair on the wireless connection.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Thnx for replying guys.
ABH
However (as suggested by ABH) Encryption id not the problem, as the other wireless machine works.
Albertross, if I try your suggestion Ipconfig /release, I get;
"All Adapters bound to DHCP do not have DHCP addresses. The addresses were automatically configured and cannot be released"
Any other ideas anyone?0 -
As you've noticed, the 169.254.x.x address has been assigned and this is why it isn't working. See http://www.smallbusinesscomputing.com/webmaster/article.php/3287631 for the reason behind this and troubleshooting steps.0

Turn off auto-configuration as in your case.......its useless!
p.s - I'm guessing the router you are using uses a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 if it does then the laptop showing a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0 will never connect.
Your home network needs to have the same subnet mask for all your network devices. All the IP's need to be on the same network too.0
