How long can they survive in the wild? DS's flew away 2 days ago and hasn't come back. I don't think I'm going to like the answer.

They are gutted. We've contacted local vets, radio, papers etc
  • Oh God no ... I am so sorry to hear that ... can you tell us vaguely what area you are in then we can keep a look out if any MSE posters are in the same area?

Well the one good thing is that at this time of year a lot of folks are putting seed out for the wild birds, so there is a chance your bird could get by if it finds a full bird table ... obviously it's not going to get the vitamins/minerals it would get if at home though.

It all depends really on the other birds ... sometimes they will attack a different species, sometimes not. I've seen a lovebird sat eating from the same bird table as a bunch of starlings and you would have thought the starlings would have attacked it, so it isn't all doom and gloom and the size of them stands them in good stead ... it tends to be smaller birds that the others go for.

Being a pet bird, it will have had plenty to eat so hopefully will have a good fat reserve incase it has to go without food for a while.

If it did any particular whistles, I would be walking round the area doing those ... it may hear them and come flying to you attracted by the tune it knows.

I wish I could say something more than that ... they are such wonderful characters .. they're a really big part of any family so I know how much you are all hurting right now, but don't give up hope ... they are intelligent birds; I would give them more of a chance than I would a budgie or a cockatiel.

Please keep us updated ... got my fingers crossed ... xxxx

Thanks Yorkiepud, it's lost from the Cornwall area, between us we've done all we can to spread the word- papers, radio, vets, facebook, email and even the local school from behind their house sent out some flyers with the children.

She's quite small, only about 1 year to 18 months old i guess and it's the only time she's been out so we just hope she's ok.

I will let you know if we hear anything.
  • Hi there ...

What about posters? I'm not sure how legal it is to put them up on lamp posts, (but I think I might try!) ... and what about notice boards in local shops?
A lot of people might not watch tv or listen to the radio but will call into their local shop ... how about supermarkets ... they have those boards where people put postcards up with items for sale ... I'm sure if you asked nicely and explained what had happened they would let you put one up there to say she was missing .... everyone goes to the supermarket!

You've probably done both those, but it's just what springs to mind ... I know there is a lost dog and cat register website .. not sure about parrots ... I know some people have posted on this website about lost parrots:
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/coffeebreak/chat/f-2082/index.html

And there is this one too ...

If your little girl had a ring with her id number on, you could register her as missing with The National Parrot's Society and if she turns up then they would reunite her with you ...

I have heard good things about them so it might be worth getting in touch with them.

Hi just wanted to update you, we had a large ad in the local paper on Thurs, on Fri evening we had a call, she had been taken in by a family about 3 miles away and has been living there for the week.

They are thrilled to have her back, after 9 days away from home I didn't think she'd survived tbh. We can't thank the people who had her enough as I'm sure they would have liked to keep her really as she's quite endearing.

    So happy ending:T:T:j:j
  • Oh, what wonderful news! I'm so pleased for you and your family. I expect the family who took her in are gutted. Is darling glad to be home?

She acting like she's done nothing wrong:o, acting same as always:p
  • Oh that is JUST wonderful!!!!! I am absolutely over the moon for you! I have wanted to post and ask if there was any news and thought nope, cos if there wasn't or the news was bad I would only be upsetting you!

If any bird stands a chance of being caught and taken in by folk, I would say it would be a Grey because they are intelligent enough to know that people = food!!!

And you never know .... you may have inadvertently introduced her rescuers to the pleasures of being Grey owners, too ... can't be bad!!

Thanks, I think they are already bird people as they had a cage from a cockatiel that had passed away. Apparently she flew down and landed on his shoulder, they seem to know who to go to somehow:)

Sounds like she had a nice holiday, being pampered!
