Trading Standards didn't want to know when my colleague complained about her experience.

OP, is it being made to order?
There are some restrictions in the Sale of Goods Act for that type of purchase.

You say... "...gave me no reassurance that i'd get a full refund"
Not quite the same as "refused a refund" is it?

For the OP, hopefully there won't be a 'next time'.
No next time of buying a wedding dress, but as I said, the sales tactic is often used for big purchases, and it certainly won't be the last time she encounters it.

i am sorry you changed your mind about dress - you sure it isnt wedding nerves? ask if you can come back to try it on again but take a trusted freind - one wwho isnt afraid of being blunt - but please dont confide your doubts this will make her picky! if she thinks you look great then go ahead. unfornutately as you chose the dress in the shop and ordered it - you havent got the option of changing your mind unless the shop agrees. if after the dress arrives - there is a problem with it (wrong size colour etc) which would give you a good reason for refusing to pay for it - then i am afraid you are stuck with it .
a suggestion here - if it fits well and its a matter of a frill or a minor detail wrong - then most bridal shops can suggest a dressmaker who can alter it for quite a small amount. another thing to look out for - the sample you tried on and the dress that arrives - is it the same? i hate to say it but some bridal shops have had dresses copied in china and they are far inferior and also illegal. in this circumstance you can refuse to pay. best wishes and i hope i have helped
