Which mattress

I'm after some advice regarding buying a new mattress. We currently have a memory foam mattress which is 5 years old and has become extremely uncomfortable. It's full of bumps and shapes and does seem to mould to the contours of my body anymore. I thought my back ache was due to giving birth but nearly a year on I've realised that it is the mattress, after having just been on holiday and feeling perfectly comfortable on the bed and not waking with back and ribs aching. So can anybody give me some advice on which mattress I should buy please? I have to say I'm a bit weary of buying another memory foam mattress but the higher priced mattresses on the market all seem to have a memory foam layer at the top. I would rather pay a bit more money and buy a decent mattress.
Thank you

I love my feather mattress on top of my medium firm sprung mattress.
Support for my back but cuddles and cradles my hips0 -
I'd say you'd need to go and try a lot and make a decision from there, I think a mattress is quite a personal thing to be honest.
I bought a new bed last year when I moved and was dead set on getting a wooden frame, I wasn't really thinking about the mattress. After trying about 40+ different beds and mattresses in different shops, I finally lay on a divan bed and fell in love (I was against divan's as didn't like the look of them). It is extremely comfy for me (firm, but not too firm, but feels soft to lie on!) but I doubt everyone would agree. Mine is from Nestledown, but that's all I know off the top of my head.
My sister swears by her memory foam mattress but I can't stand them. To me they're too hot and I feel as though i'm slowly sinking in to them. I half expect to wake up completely 'eaten' by the mattress!Grocery challenge - Nov: £52/£100

Any good quality mattress that is looked after and turned on a regualar basis should last at least a good 10 years.
What was the make and model of your mattress?0 -

Hi Tim, I think this is the problem I bought it on Ebay without any prior knowledge about memory foam mattresses and for about £270. I now realise that there are different quality memory foam mattresses very much dependant on how much you spend especially in relation to the density ratio of the foam.0 -
Hi i got a pocket sprung mattress with a memory foam topper yesterday, first night on it last night, slept like a baby compared to my old mattress.
So if you get a new mattress and its not to yr liking you could try and put a memory foam topper on top, my topper is only a cpl of inches thick, really comfy and u dont sink, so far so good ....!
MOVE ALONG........ nothing to see here..! :rolleyes:0 -
We have a standard mattress and bought a memory foam topper from Costco. Once memory foam is wearing we can chuck and just replace that.
I couldn't live with an in-built one.
My memory foam doesn't make me sweat or too hot but it did come in it's own removable cover so I guess that helps not lying with a thin cotton sheet next to a wedge of foam.I have a gift for enraging people, but if I ever bore you it'll be with a knife

Good quality memory foam should out last the springs. So it is more likely that you would throw the mattress away and keep the topper.
Mattresses with memory foam built in do work better than a mattress and a topper. The only problem is that 2 sided pocket sprung mattresses are still quite rare. So in most cases it makes the mattress non turn, which won't last as long.
A topper should never be used to try and revive an old worn out mattress, as the spring layer is very important for support.0 -

first of all my apologies for hijacking this thread...but i am also looking at purchasing a Double Mattress...
Preferably a combination of memory foam and pocket springs...i came across this one from Healthbeds (selling on mattressman website) which falls within my budget of around £250-300. Its called the Pocket Memory 1000 with 1000 pocket springs, 50mm foam (25mm memory, 25mm reflex).
Not sure how it rates...so any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!0 -

There are other Healthbeds mattresses with 50mm of memory foam which is the optimum. 25mm isn't really enough to benefit from the memory foam.0
