Ive am currently running Nortons Internet Security which consists of an antivirus and firewall. My modem is a Belkin router which also consists of its own firewall too. I am wondering if I could remove my Nortons completely, as it seems to slow down my laptop so much, and would I still be secure?
I also use a site called Windows Safety Live ( http://safety.live.com/site/en-US/default.htm ) which scans for virus's and trojan etc, so if I did remove Nortons, would I be better installing another antivirus and keep it running, or frequently use the scanner on this site? I would really gratefull for any advice on this as its been annoying, and puzzling me at the same time for months.
Thanks

keep an on access scanner running all the time. Try avast or avg if norton is slowing the PC too much, they are free..
Scan with on-line scanners as well periodically.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Hi
NIS is a known resource hog!!!!! No wonder it slows you down...... I would probably run a well known freebie equivalant ..... Zone Alarm for your firewall and AVG or AVAST for the AV stuff. Make sure also you update your windows on a regular basis. Also a trojan/malware scan every now and then is also a must I think. Your suggestion I will try!!!!!
On a personal note I am running Norton Internet Security 2006 which has run smoothly so far but I am having a problem running a game called GTR (stuttering every now and then!). It may be due to NIS using too much memory though I ain't done the calcs!!.... After turning off most stuff I end up with 670MB approx (1GB syst.). I am unsure what windows eats up so I cannot say yet how much of a "hog" NIS 2006 is!!!!
Anyhow HTH

Funny you mention this now - I've had NIS 2005 since last Sept, but recently have had quite a few problems with 'HTTP/404 - Page cannot be displayed errors'. When I go to another laptop on the same broadband connection, the page open quickly without error. I'm pretty certain NIS is the issue and am contemplating removal and going for the AVG/ZoneAlarm solution.0

Exactly what happens to me0 -
norton is a system hogger and will slow your computer down. there are afew other free options for firewalls and anti virus. i run Sygate firewall and AVG-free for anti virus. these together work well for me0

Sometimes Norton can be really difficult to remove (had this issue on my Dad's PC recently)
If you have problems try this page: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
or this one gives some downloadable tools if the method above doesn't work:

Personally I would advise having a hardware firewall and a software firewall. But if you don't have a hardware firewall, then most definitely you must have a software firewall, broadband or no broadband.
I have had Norton Internet Security for a couple of years, and had no problems with resource hogging. But I have a fast PC with lots of memory! i]smirk[/i
