FTB, moving in 2 weeks time, when do I switch?

Hi, I am moving into my first house in 2 weeks time. The current owner uses npower for gas and EDF for electricity. I am just wondering, when do I have to call the suppliers to tell about changed ownership and whether they will tie me with a deal straight away? Or can I keep using the same suppliers until I find a better deal? There are meters, not prepayment.
Also a BIG question in my mind. Is there any plan where I read my meter monthly and pay accurately to the meter reading so that no one gets hurt?

  • You have to be with the current suppliers for 1 month but the process of switching takes 6 - 8 weeks so you could start now if you wanted.

If you want to stay with them you can no problem just register your name with them and give them both meter reads.

As far as I know <<cough>> <<choke>> Utility Warehouse are the only supplier who will bill you monthly in actual arrears.

You are, of course, free with most suppliers to choose their more competitive tariffs and read your meter and make an additional actual payment yourself.

Absolutely correct, KY. And a brilliant initiative it is. I input my meter readings online at the end of the month and approx 14 days later the paper bill pops through my letter box showing the actual charge on the actual usage (less, in my case, the rather huge discount for using the cash back card ;) ) . Taken out by DD, no need to get in credit or debit. Job done.
