Advent Laptop / TheTechGuys problems... please help!

Hey all,

I purchased an Advent Laptop last year from Currys.

Over the last month or so, it started developing problems. The CD Drive only works and reads CDs when it wants to, and the touchpad on the laptop is in its own world! It moves around when it wants, but the most annoying problem with it is that when I want to single-click something, it works as a double click!! Grrr

As its still in warranty, I called up Currys and asked me to do a full wipe of Windows and reinstall it using the recovery cds ( I thought they might ask me to do this!) I questioned them as it was a hardware problem and not really a software problem as they asked me to try the mouse and cd in Safe Mode - it was apparent there problem was still there. The man on the phone told me to go ahead and reinstall Windows as this could fix it.

I tried to do this but the recovery cd program crashed on it and crashed in the same place!! So I called them up again and they wanted it to be sent in for repair.

I did this, waited 10 days and it came back to me. According to the report sent with it, they installed a new cd drive and a new hard drive. It does state on it that I repoted the mouse was faulty, but it has been sent back the same!! The cursor still moves around when it wants to AND it the mouse button double clicks when I want it to single click!!

I get the feeling if I call Currys again, they will want the laptop sent in again!! This is very very annoying as I need the laptop for my job. I work 9am-6pm Monday to Friday and I use my laptop everyday and every hour of my shift. I was 10 days without it once it got sent in for the first repair, now I am going to be another 10 days without it.

Is there no possibility that I can simply ask for an exchange from a Currys store for the laptop? The laptop was bought on 27/09/2008 so its nearly a year old and the warranty runs out very soon on it so I would ideally like the problems fixed on it before the warranty runs out. However, I really would like to simply go in my lunch hour at work to Currys and exchange the laptop. Do you think they would let me do this, or ideally is there any kind of legal law somewhere that states my rights to this?

I have wrote to TheTechGuys in an email stating my complaint. I will also call them tommorow morning to tell them whats happened but I really want this sorted ASAP

Any information will be appreciated

Thanks guys

Vijay x

Ok, you bought from a domestic retailer, so they offer you a domestic guarantee, at worst case you should have gone to PC World, and there you would have been able to purchase a Business warranty, that would have given you a loan machine, etc etc.

there is a 28 day exchange warranty, so you're obviously out of that right now, but you do have a 28 day rule you can still rely on. So, you need to know exactly what date you originally stated the fault with the trackpad, and the hassle with the restores etc etc. yes you will still need to send it away, no way around that as you've got a domestic warranty, but, if they take too long to repair it, or it comes back with the same fault again, then after 28 days, you have a right (it's in your Ts & Cs) that you can request a replacement, which will be in the form of vouchers..

Now, even on a 1 year warranty, there are no places that come to mind that will offer you a spare machine while they repair, you did buy an Advent, which IMO is a poor quality brand...
