Hi,
I'm wondering if someone could recommend any psychology books that would give me an idea about the subject as a whole as i'm thinking about studying it?
I don't have access to a library at the moment so anything on Amazon etc would be good.

Psychology by Richard Gross is a good basic book to start if you're new to the subject, and covers many areas in Psychology. Also, I think it's on the reading list of a lot of Psychology courses, so you should be able to pick one up secondhand on amazon, gumtree or check the notice boards of your local colleges and Uni's.0

If you are anywhere local, I have some you are welcome to. They are old so some of it would be OOD if you were ready to start a course, but most of the core studies are decades old and don't really change, so you'd still get a good overview in terms of background reading. When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.0

As a very basic overview of subjects I had lecturers recommending books from the 'A Very Short Introduction to...' series. I used them for courses on Memory and Decision as it was only a half module so didn't want to spend a fortune on an expensive textbook but the lecture notes weren't enough.
Psychology: A Very Short Introduction is £5.19 on Amazon0 -
hey, im doing psychology at uni at the moment.
This one is good, its about cognitive psy it was on my reading list for 1st year but i used it in 2nd year aswell

This one is the one that I had for AS its not as detailed as the other but it does explain all different types of psychology and has some of the well known experiments in it and its not too thick either for background reading,

go for the 'brief introduction' book rather than any text book. easier to read as an overview and a lot cheaper!
are you thinking about studying it for a degree or for A level? makes a difference in terms of what I'd recommend.....:happyhear0 -

Gross - now there is a blast from the past! I did a degree in a social science based subject and Gross was the bible for every module I studied. Try the newest edition, it was a great help for meEver wonder about those people who spend £2 apiece on those little bottles of Evian water? Try spelling Evian backward.0 -
Also try your local oxfam, we've got a dedicated book shop and i've got loads of psychology books from there xx0

i would also like to pitch in with "Psychology in Focus A Level" edited by Mike Haralambos and David Rice. I used this during my HEFC psych course, and will be keeping it near into my first year at uni as it covers a lot in mild-moderate detail, and is generally excellent.
