American Express Travellers Cheque Card

I am going to Teneriffe at the end of June and I am thinking about purchasing an American Express travellers cheque card for ease of use instead of leaving £1,000 worth of euros and travellers cheques in the hotel and just carrying round the card instead.

has anyone used one before and are they worth getting?

Yes I've used a US$ card but they were offering a cash bonus at the time. Watch out for ATM charge which is made in addition to any charge made by the ATM provider and minimum withdrawal which can leave you with odd amounts on the card. You are probably better off with a Nationwide a/c which gives you free overseas ATM withdrawals.

There is a technical point that you are not covered for any loss on the AMTC if they go bust.
There are some other points that restrict it's use so well worth reading the T&C's first.
The good point is you can have one for anyone in your family over 18 so load it up and give it to the kids as a back up as well as cash.
I would go with Nationwide and have the AMTC for other spends where you don't need credit card insurance on your purchase.ie buying pizza.
