Royal Mail

Hiya

I've recently discovered that mail being sent is, well, not being recieved. I've failed to get 2 letters from my bank and one from the Job Centre. These are only 3 i know of, they number could be much higher.
The letter from the JCP has now affected my benefits which i will not be able to get backdated.
So first off, what can i do about my missing mail? It states on the website you must wait 15 days before putting in a claim. How do i know it's been 15 days when the letters aren't coming through? And, what will actually be done about it?
And secondly, how can i claim back money which has been stopped due to Royal Mails failure to do their job properly?

Thanks

Before you lay the blame firmly at Royal Mail's feet, bear in mind that some bank's/JC's have their mail collected by a courier (the profitable part), who sort it into postcode areas and then dump it into Royal Mail to deliver to you as this part doesn't yield any profit for them. It's called Downstream Access. Your letters could still be somewhere in a couriers system! Royal Mail can only deliver to you what they receive!

The first thing to bear in mind is that you aren't Royal Mail's customer. You can't make claims for missing mail. That's the sender's responsibility.

  • If you call Royal Mail (number in phone book) there is a dept for complaints. I had the same problem last year, I only knew I wasn't receiving my mail when I definitely expecting something (if you see what I mean). I lost tax letters - that caused untold problems - and cheques as well as cards and goodness knows what else.

Royal Mail took it very seriously, they sent local people to speak to me and managers from the wider area called, explained the process and told me what they would do to try and find out where the problem was. They sent test letters etc. I don't think anything has gone missing since.

It really is worthwhile calling them as they will do their best to solve the problem.

It is up to the sender to chase them for refunds for items sent etc.

    Hope this helps.
