Buttonhole, how to keep fresh?

I made a gents buttonhole for our local show but I was running out of steam and couldn't think how to keep it fresh. Has anyone here ever done one of these? If so, how did you keep it fresh? Mine won a First because they were judged on the day they were made but the next day when the public come in they all looked pathetic.
I did a lot of other stuff as well and won many firsts but only because of lack of competition which spoils it I think.

My mum was a florist so I had the job of button holes (slave labour I have to add:D) and she used to mist them regularly to keep them moist which helped to retain the freshness. She sometimes put them in the fridge which works with some flowers but not the more delicate ones.

  • when I have seen these, they have often had a bit of dampened cotton wool wrapped around the cut end, which is then covered with a piece of foil to keep the moisture in...

Our local show was the same, but I persevered and kept entering those classes no one else did, this year we had a very healthy entry list on most things and winning them was a real achievement, it gets better every year. If no one sees anyone else entering they won't bother.

I encourage every one I can to enter stuff, most of the time they don't think their stuff is good enough, but I tell them it's for enjoyment and for the show, often they do well anyway :)

I did really well this year and have a couple of trophy's on my sideboard, pretty chuffed tbh.
