they are a big dutch bank. they bought Bearings bank after Nick Leeson ran up those "multi billion" debts. they are appropriately registered and therefore have the same insurance as any of the other big 4 banks.

as an aside its interesting how all our savings are insured. Basically if any bank goes bust we get back something like 90+ percent of the first twenty or thirty something thousand. after that we go to the back of the queue and only get more cash after all the other creditors and the recievers are paid.

of course, if a bank could pay off all its debts, it wouldn't be broke in the first place!

not that I have 20 plus thousand cash lying about (I wish!) ;)

In practice Banks only have hold about 1.5% of their total liabilities as assets. In other words they only hold about £1.50 for each £100 they have lent out to people. It is how most modern economies create money supply.

There was an article in the times today slagging off ING for poor customer service, terrible helplines, web site crashes etc. They put it down to overwelming demand - which is what surely happens when you have the best interest rate.

Yep , i've had lousy service from them as well. I tried to open a joint account with them a while ago and hit problems right from the word go. The biggest problem being that they think my wife - Mrs Cat- does not exist. After several letters ans lots of completely unproductive phone calls (you know the ones 30 mins on hold speak to a muppet, place on hold again, call broken) i have decided to carry on using the savings account with my existing bank - Cahoot, a bank that have given me excellent service since day one.

IMG- pants, your service sucks like a hoover in a bucket of treacle

I must be the only person not to have had any problems - apart from Experian not knowing who I was, which is hardly Ing's fault. I mean, I have only lived here 22 years, renewed my passport twice, and opened numerous bank accounts, they all knew who I was.

Did take quite a while to make the initial contact with Ing, but since then no probs.

And I opened an ING account personally (they dont know who i am - it's not special treatment) and had no problems barring a slightly cumbersome system to get password and account login.

howeveer they have had customer service problems - its widely reported. In truth it is a 'luck' question

I haven't had any problems with ING, apart from taking over a week to clear my transactions.

I had problems with Experian as well earlier this year.  They had no record of me at my current address despite being on the Electoral Roll for the past 3 years.

I rang for thir information pack 11 days ago and it still hasn't arrived. Has anyone else waited this long? Is it normal?

Iopened an account with them when they first advertised, and have not had a problem. But then I have had no need as of yet to use the customer service.

I`ve had an account from day one with no probs at all.
Just wondering if they will hold the rate when all the rest start cutting next month.
I don`t believe that ING offer mortgages in UK so maybe rate will hold or at lease not go down full .25%.
