Hi, im a first time poster and looking for some much needed advice. Recently i had a phone call from a telesales person on behalf of Moneyclub.com promoting their website, they said that if i paid a £1 one month and another £1 the following month, which was to be paid by direct debit, i could benefit from all they had to offer for two months, then they would phone me back and see how they helped me save any money. I was stupid enough to give my bank details over the phone, agreeing to only paying the £2. A few days later i found to my horror that they had taken £98 from my bank account without my knowledge or content. I am at present, due to ill health, living on benefits, and i would never have committed myself willingly. I contacted them straight away explaining the situation and they said that they had sent me a membership pack, something i have never received and in the pack it explained that they would be taking £98 membership fee. I then emailed them again asking for their name of directors and a head office address, but they wrote back saying the same thing as the first letter, completely ignoring any of my questions i asked in my email and with no address or names i can contact. They have stated that i should appreciate that substantial costs are incurred when setting up a direct debit, which they say i confirmed. I did no such thing. They also refuse to cancel my membership until the renewal date, but as they do not contact me letting me know when my renewal date would be, they will just continue to take money from my bank account. Im hoping someone can give me some advice on what steps i can take to stop them taking money again, and also any information on how to get my money back. I would be grateful for any advice , and thank you for your help.

Have you contacted your bank?
ETA: Who has the payment gone to? https://www.moneyclub.com is not even a live site.0 -
It seems as though you have, by giving them your bank details, unwittingly authorised them to set up a direct debit against your bank account.
As sarahg1969 says, contact your bank. Tell them to cancel any direct debit for this organisation, and tell the bank you did not authorise the £98.00 deduction, and under the direct debit guarantee you would like the £98.00 back.
Write to the firm telling them that their membership pack is waiting for collection by them. They just need to make an appointment to collect it.
Sounds like you might find The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) of some use.0 -
Their web site is themoneyclub.co.uk - trust this helps0

just found this on their direct debit form , so on their own form they should not take the money for 2 months
http://www.themoneyclub.co.uk/join_entryForm.cfmI authorise The Money Club to charge by Direct Debit, the sum of £89.00. To ensure full continuity of my membership benefits, I additionally authorise the Money Club to charge £98.00 to my Direct Debit 2 months from the date below and thereafter anually until such time as I instruct you, in writing, to cancel my membership. I understand that I can cancel this instruction at any time and owe nothing further.it also says at the top of the formIf you are not satisfied that the membership can save you money, return your membership card no later than two months after you receive it. We will cancel your application and refund your subscription in full. Membership subscription £89 registration fee for the first 2 months then £98 annually thereafter. Acceptance valid only if the Direct Debit instruction below is completed.Ex forum ambassador

I worked for this nasty lot when I was at college; they're a vile group of people. I did the job that was the initial call you received (for three days, then I walked out.)
They're liars and cheats. We were told to tell continual lies in the initial call, then there would be a follow up call which pushed people into purchasing. It was all phrased very, very well and we were encouraged to give half details. I find it very easy to believe they've done something without your authorisation
You should be able to get the payment back from your bank, as someone else mentioned. Also worth reporting them to Trading Standards; they've been in trouble before.
Also, the Telephone Preference Service will be no use - to avoid them, you need to be ex-directory. We were given numbers to call that were just print-outs from the Thompson directory.0 -
Thank you all for your comments and help. I have contacted my bank again and they are looking into the direct debit for me. Also i phoned the company again which i should state that it is themoneyclub.co.uk, i got it wrong in the last letter i posted on here, as i put .com. and that was a different company. They were just as unhelpful as the last time i phoned them and they even cut me off when i was asking too many questions. I just feel so angry that companies can get away with stealing money from your bank account and that its the victim that has to fight to prove that they are in the wrong.0

I was also misled by themoneyclub and shocked to discover the annual subscription charge had been taken out of my account. I researched this site and others and quoted several of the comments I found on this blog to them. They still insisted that I wasn't entitled to a full refund but "as a gesture of goodwill" they agreed to it and I received a cheque back for £99! I was hugely relieved as it made me feel so stupid.0
