Lump sum of £40,000 but no idea where to put it

A friend of mine has a lump sum of £40,000, spread over 5 accounts, none of which are earning him any real interest.
Can anyone advise where he should put it to maximise the gains?
He doesn't need access to it for at least a year.

Smoke free days = 11 Years :T

www.egg.com for a 3.25% easy access account.
Post Office for a one year fixed account at 3.85%.0
