Another vote for a proper piano - I wish I had the space in the house
I think the child keyboards are a bit of a waste, often have too many gimmicks that distract etc. Again, they need to get used to the keyboard and although difficult at first, it is still possible to play with small hands. THere are proper weighted keyboards that feel like a piano so this would be a second best if space is an issue. (My DH - age 6 - is learning violin that is at least portable - and does come in different sizes - the sound is not bad as you would think either).
Invest in lessons as well! (my local authority does them - the teacher comes into the school - but for piano you will probably have to find a private teacher).0
