childs piano, where can i buy one from

Options
hi my eldest daughter has surprised us all and said she wants a piano for her birthday when she will be 7. I like the baby grand piano's, cheapest on ebay is £140.00 which seems a little too much, ELC do one for £ bu not sure if it looks a bit babyish for a 7 yr old. what do you think?

argos do another one but my wife thinks this looks like its for a younger child.

  • Not sure if this helps but our local music shop rents instruments out, I remember getting a guitar for my son who was really keen, but after a couple of months it went back. Or what about a keyboard? They're great fun as you get all the different effects on them & they're not too bad a price. http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Browse/ID72/14419574/c_1/1%7Ccategory_root%7CHome+entertainment+and+sat+nav%7C14419512/c_2/2%7Ccat_14419512%7CMusical+instruments%7C14419569/c_3/3%7Ccat_14419569%7CMusic+keyboards%7C14419574.htm
  • Hiya,

tbh, both the pianos are far too young for a 7 year old, i've got the one from ELC, my daughter (4years) wanted one but the keys are very limited and she gets frustrated because she can't play certain nursery rhymes! We're saving up for a proper miniture piano now:D

Thanks for replying both, will look at the keyboards, got two other girls so I'm sure they will make great use of it, my wife is not convinced its not going to be one of these 5 min toys!

I'm a piano teacher... I think a keyboard with full sized keys is a more useful start than anything miniaturised as the spacings between the keys are something standardised across all keyboard instruments and getting used to them is the beginning of a skill for life. I'd recommend looking at touch sensitive keyboards. Seven is a good age to begin proper piano lessons. You don't need a piano at first.

    +1 on a keyboard.

They're reasonably priced nowadays and are packed with features. One, you'll be very happy to hear, is a headphone socket! ;)

Keyboard, definitely. If they don't like it, it has a resale value without transportation hassles. DD2 copes perfectly well with keyboard at home and piano at school. She is one of the few kids who has the confidence to walk up to a piano and can instantly play a tune - not chopsticks or für elise either!

I managed to get a piano (upright) from freecycle, its a bit bashed in places.... and a couple of the keys need looking at but for nothing I am very happy.... My DD is very keen on playing with her keyboard (shes only 3!) so a free piano was a no brainer.

Try freecycle, its often more expensive to dump a piano than it is to give it away!

I would recommend going to auctions. Nobody wants to have to get them home so tends to be cheaper there
  • Do you have a Freecycle in your area. I am aware of a couple of folk who have landed on their feet with good pianos free. Just be prepared to say no thank you if it is not in good condition. A re tune may be required aswell.
