Website design

Anyone know if it is possible to set up a website so that people can access (and perhaps even input data) after payment of a registration fee?
Also, I know this is vague but what would be the rough setting up and running costs?

  • Well yes of course, imagine ebay without such a feature

Yes, rough costs could go from a few thousand to a decently designed professional small site to tens+ for a large commercial site.

I think based on the OP's description a few thousand is miles away, I assume he/she just wants some form of payment gateway that when used would create an account or they could even just take the payments and then manually create the accounts, that bit is simple enough, what would really cost is the system inside, what kind of data? if its just a big list with few input boxes then that would be cheap whereas if you wanted the whole thing like a catalogue for example that would cost a lot more
  • you need to look at some form of wiki / cms that accepts or has a paypal module in it. An alternative is set up a registration form on a static web site that takes a paypal payment, then once you are happy they have paid, you create them an account on your private wiki / cms

Its all possible, but I doubt anyone with the skills to intergrate such a setup (quite complex) will offer the level support you need to set this up for free on here (although I might be wrong) Your best bet would be to engage a professional developer or fire up Google and be prepared to do some serious reading. I would suggest looking at joomla or drupal as they are widely used and have a multitude of addons. They are also both written in PHP which is one of the easiest server side scripting languages to learn.

  • you can do tis with most cms' that have a payment gateway addon, even forum software like smf and vbulletin allows this!

This could be done for less than £300 but it depends on your exact specs
