Missing .dll files. Help please!

I was able to install and run MBAM. I can also run internet explorer, despite explorer.exe being on the list. However, msnmsgr.exe and google chrome are on the list and will not run. I dont know what the rest of the things on the list are - userinit.exe, pctstray.exe, apdproxy.exe (13 messages re that one) are a few of them.

Im using internet explorer now - cant get into firefox or chrome (both installed / reinstalled in the last hour.)

If you're xp it's best to run restore in safemode with your av turned off.

Or you can do a repair install which will retain your data (but backup first).

sounds a bit like the "virut" virus which attacks .exe files, in which case its a format and fresh instal of windows. Can you post up the malwarebytes log it might help as suggested in post #4, also download and run Hijackthis and post log.

AVG8 is known to bring up a load of false positives, means files are not infected but AVG says they are, AVG8 is not the only antivirus that does this, I would suggest uninstalling AVG and go with AVAST home edition which is a lot better than AVG.

Before uninstalling AVG and reinstalling the OS, put the files back from quarantine and then reboot, then install AVAST and see if the same files get put back into quarantine.
I would also suggest download COMBOFIX.
userinit.exe, pctstray.exe, apdproxy.exe <userinit.exe is required by windows without it windows wont load.
pctstray.exe is part of pc tools, apdproxy is something to do with adobe photoshop.

I was silly and tried to do a few otherthings while MBAM was running - including take everything out of quarintine. Computer froze and then when it started to work again I got avg warning every 10 seconds . I removed the avg and restarted computer - all error messages have now gone Will go have a look at AVAST now.

I really appreciate all your help - hopefully this is it sorted (or at least on its way to being sorted)

you should run malwarebytes again but this time when the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. Then run again and post the log and let us see if there is anything still to clean out, I would not say you are clean yet
