Probably an odd question but is there anything i can do with polystyrene chips?
Having been on this forum people try and make other uses for anything they possibly can but i am at a loss.
I have put them on freecycle but no-one seems interested.
I have 2 black sack fulls and seems a shame to go to the tip with them.
I don't send any fragile things throgh the post, so any uses for them

I put them in the bottom of pots for drainage instead of crocks. Means I can move the pots without breaking the bank!2019 fashion on a ration 0/66 coupons0

How extreme a money saver are you? You could put them in an old duvet cover and put them under your bath (behind the side panel), basically lagging your bath. They will keep your bath water hotter for longer. :-)Tess x

They are great for making cauliflowers out of if you have smallish children - I've made huge cauliflowers for a harvest display with a roundish piece of card, poly chips glued all over to make the cauli curds and some green paper cut for leaves round the side.
If you can't use them could a local playgroup/parent and toddler etc. group find a use - perhaps you could put them on freecycle.0 -
I just thought, if you're going to use them under the bath, leave them in plastic bags, I think a duvet cover would eventually get damp and start smelling.

Blimey...... I can't believe that no one on Freecycle wants them. I rescue used A4 and C5 envelopes (carefully opened by me) from work and they are snapped up by eBayers on my Freecyle group. So I am sure they would want these for packing.
It might be worth trying again, mentioning eBay in the subject perhaps, or putting them on the neighbouring group.
Your local allotment society might also be interested (for the bottom of pots as mentioned), ours take shredded paper from me......... can't bear to chuck anything out from the office
Must say I agree with using them around the bath too.......... I know that peeps often use loft lagging for this.0 -

have you tried your local school, nursery or playgroup? They are always looking out for things like that to do art work.Save £12k in 2012 no.49 £10,250/£12,000
Save £12k in 2013 no.34 £11,800/£12,000
'How much can you save' thread = £7,050
Total=£29,100
Mfi3 no. 88: Balance Jan '06 = £63,000. :mad:

I took a bag of these to work years ago to use with children in art projects, etc, but when I went on a play course which covered various Health & Safety aspects, a child health worker said not to use these because they don't show up on an X-ray if child swallows one and can cause an obstruction. I don't know if this is true, but just in case, I didn't use them again. I've put them in large pots to enable me to use less compost but apart from that, I just save them for sending parcels or throw them away (which I hate doing because everything in this house gets scrutinised to see if it's got another & can be kept out of landfill) Am wondering if they could be used to insulate tender plants that need overwintering in the greenhouse.....i.e standing the plantpot inside a bigger plantpot and cramming the gap between the two with as many of these chips as you can pack in. Haven't tried it yet but as it's usually cold enough here for me to lose at least half my pelargoniums, I think I might try it!2025's challenges: 1) To fill our 10 Savings Pots to their healthiest level ever
