Advice needed - Indesit washing machine not working!!!

Hope somebody can help me....
I've got an Indesit WD10 washer/dryer. A few months ago it stopped drying - I realised it wasn't getting hot. I wasn't overly bothered, because I only used it for towels and bedding, so decided to make do without a dryer. I didn't really think it through properly, as obviously it isn't heating the water in the wash cycles either (we don't have a hot water input).
I'm guessing it's either the thermostat or element, but need to know if there's a way of finding out which I need to buy without having to call someone out to look at it.
My OH will be able to replace whatever it is (as he's quite good like that!), but he's working 12-18 hour days at the mo, so hasn't really got time to take it apart to see what it needs. And if he did, it could be weeks before he got the time to fit the new part, and washing with cold water is better than nothing!
Really hope there's someone out there who knows about this sort of thing!

Hi
I had the same model in my flat and it was the thermostat that had broken. We called a guy out to fix it, only cost us £40 although I am nearky 100% certain this was the call out charge as I looked on line and you could get the part for around £10Shtf 27th sept 2012....
