Tesco credit card! Sorry bit of a long one

I got a credit card a while back to use for bigger purchaes/online for safety in these uncertain times. Its my first time having a cc, so have a low credit limit. (I have no other debts). Anyway, I wanted to buy something which is just over my credit limit (£20 over). I called them to ask if they could raise credit limit and the girl said the only way to do that was to PAY the money I wanted to spend on the cc into my credit card account from a debit card. I did this expecting what I had paid to cover the purchase. I called back today as my boyfriend said thats not right what she told me and guess what - she lied!!!! Stupid Tesco credit card worker - she never told me yesterday that if I go over my credit limit even if I have the money in the cc account, I will have to pay a fee for doing that. The customer service lady today told me that I should pay the amount I have on my credit limit by the credit card and the rest by a different card (I am paying online, she told me to call Dixons). I am not happy! Tesco lied to me and now I have paid in money to my credit card account which I wont be able to use. I was told I can call back next week when the funds cleared from my debit card to the cc account and close the account, and that the money I paid in will be refunded in 3 - 4 weeks by cheque. Seriously this company is a joke!!!

Anyway, as I want all the money back I dont trust what they said today and I want to know if you can get money back from a credit card? I will be closing the account

II wanted to buy something which is just over my credit limit (£20 over).

    Okay, not unusual.
I called them to ask if they could raise credit limit and the girl said the only way to do that was to PAY the money I wanted to spend on the cc into my credit card account from a debit card. I did this expecting what I had paid to cover the purchase.

Presumably from reading your post you didn't just pay the £20 "extra" that you needed onto your card to create a £20 credit balance, allowing you to pay for the thing that was costing "limit + £20"?
I called back today as my boyfriend said thats not right what she told me and guess what - she lied!!!! Stupid Tesco credit card worker - she never told me yesterday that if I go over my credit limit even if I have the money in the cc account, I will have to pay a fee for doing that.

They don't lie IME, but they may have made a mistake or you may have misunderstood her.

I'm not following how you're over your credit limit if you put the card into credit - and I think if I'm following you that you put the card into credit by the "full amount" of your purchase, which would mean that when you paid for the thing, the balance would have come back to nil?
The customer service lady today told me that I should pay the amount I have on my credit limit by the credit card and the rest by a different card (I am paying online, she told me to call Dixons).

So she's now telling you to use two methods of payment and not to put the card into credit? I'm confused now. You can definitely make multiple payments using any half-decent EPOS till but can't think of any websites where you can record multiple payment methods.

Ah wait, you mean that you didn't check your Tesco card balance to show that you were in credit before you made the purchase? So you made a payment to your card which would normally take 3 to 4 days to clear and then spent more than your "available funds" allowed to take you over your credit limit?
Anyway, as I want all the money back I dont trust what they said today and I want to know if you can get money back from a credit card? I will be closing the account

But if you've made the purchase, how can you now ask for a refund?

Do you mean that you want the £12 over-limit fee refunded, and your 0% purchase promotion reinstated and any resulting interest credited back to you?

EDIT: Before you fly off the handle and throw away a perfectly good card, you need to take a few deep breaths, realise the straight-forward and simple mistake that you've made (albeit with some CS advice that maybe wasn't detailed or explicit enough), and chalk this one down to a lesson learned. You've had the credit search, you've got the card with a 12 month 0% on purchases offer - use it for what it's good for (0% purchases) and clear it at the end of the 12 months once you've had your use out of it.
