Upgraded ADSL - do I need new modem?

Hi
We upgraded to a 8mb service which started yesterday and I know there are 10 days in which your speed can go up and down so I'm not too worried about my speed still being less than 2mb at the moment. I have read though that some modems are not able to cope with higher eg 8mb speeds and that I might be better off with a router.
Please someone who knows about these things - what's a router and how do I connect it? My modem is BT voyager 105 is this a "slow" modem? I'm hoping to get a laptop later this year and then have the PC and laptop both connected to broadband. the laptop would need a wireless connection somehow.
Can I get an all singing all dancing router or whatever that would cope with the higher speeds and also later on provide a wireless connection for this laptop?
Thanks for reading this and hopefully helping.

I've got a BT1800HG wireless router which works fine with an 8mbit ADSL line from Bulldog, and lets we connect multiple wi-fi laptops, plus 4 wired PCs0

Did you upgrade with BT? You should have been able to select the free Voyager 205 router when you placed your order. Might be worth contacting BT customer services and see if they can send you one.0

According to the data sheet for the 105, it supports up to 8meg downstream, so you'll be OK for the moment.Dave. :wave:0

Thanks for that information - I struggled to find out specific info on the voyager, just got blurb on buying it.0
