Thanks all for your help so far.

I know doing 2 sides will mean doing it manually which I accept rather than spending more on a full duplexing model.

Can anyone tell me how easy it is to smudge the prints. Not just when they come out of the eprinter but when they are dry?

I've got an HP 6980 which cost around £100 about 18 months ago. It does duplex printing, automatically, will print on paper up to 280 g/m2 and have never experienced "wet" printout or smudging - but I think quality of paper is key here. Don't simply use "photocopy" paper.

I think perhaps that, generally, the technology may have moved on since you last tried an inkjet. Certainly, I hadn't owned one for very many years (7+) and have been pleasantly surprised at the improvement.

For starters, here's an HP DT7260 to consider, but do look at other printers and do shop around when you've selected one to buy!

    Thanks Debt_Free_Chick

Just looked a the last inkjets we had and they were HP Deskjets 990CXI with auto duplex but we bought two were over £500 and we got very fed up with buying inks!! And they did smudge so glad to hear that aspect is better.

That was back in the days where agents (us) details were two sides and an odd pic but times moved on so we needed something much more heavy weight.

I fear that you may use so much colour ink that a cheap laser may be the better option and the inks wont run, paper won't warp.

To be honest, my first option would be to have them printed out by another party. My second option would be a colour laser. I would only think of ink if I was doing one-off, or large runs and have it set up with a continual inking system.

These lasers are all around £100

  • When printing something ink heavy, the paper quality will matter just as much as the printer you can get double sided photo paper in various weights, I always buy decent branded stuff (you can often tell you printer what brand you have chosen) as the cheap stuff I had from the pound shop left dark colours (ie lots of ink) with patches where the ink didn't bond well and smudged.
In terms of printers, I always buy HP, currently have a D5100 which is great (and prints cd's which is the best gimmick ever).

Again thanks as you have helped me make my mind up - I think ;-)

I have now made up my mind that I will get them done by a local print shop. The main reason is I have looked more closely at my needs and there will be some A3 sheets which would be better full size and not by attaching 2 A4's together.
