Sharing Files Between Different Domains

Hi all... a quick question if you don't mind.

I have just Wi-Fi'd my flat. I have a router in the lounge, an adapter in my desktop PC and my work laptop has integrated 802.11g. Great.

However my work laptop has a problem with really agressive work security. I can't change the Domain that it logs on to or it throws all of its toys out of the pram and won't let me back in. Not great.

I can PING, I have set up an FTP server on my desktop that works great, but I can't get Windows file sharing to work. If I try and run e.g. \\192.168.1.3 to access the shared files... nothing.

Is there any way you can think of to get this working? I run Win 2K on the work laptop and Win XP SP2 on the home desktop.

Thanks in advance,
Eddy

Is it something as simple as Windows firewall blocking the share request? I'm assuming that you have set up a Windows share and you're not trying to get to the ftp folder using that address.

You may need to open up the firewall on your desktop as well as the laptop (if there is one) to allow filesharing.

I would say go to your work computer administrator, as it is your employer's property. I think you will find it is confirgured to stop employees visiting forbidden sites and getting the employer into trouble (if you get my drift..)
  • Try this from your "work" PC:

    net use q: \\ip-address-of-the-other-pc\c$ /USER:<workgroup-of-other-PC>\<username-you-use-on-other-PC> *

It should prompt for a password - if it "completes successfully" then Q: on the work PC is C: on the other PC.

    Worth a try.

    To disconnect it:

    NET USE Q: /D
