  • surely big shops buy in bulk, no need to charge so much.. check out tesco or local newsagents- often do small cans of pop for 25-30p..

and load up gum etc from nearest £1 shop

There is a sainsburys about 30 seconds walk from WHsmiths at Paddington.. (inside the station) you could have just gone there and got it all cheaper

You could have bought own brand Boots painkillers from Boots (also around the corner from boots witihn the station).

You picked the wrong place to shop.. it's not the shops fault - you could have been a better shopper
Thanks for your very helpful comments. Silly old me for not picking the right shop. I was on my way down to visit my elderly Mum who'd been taken into hosptal the night before and I had other more important things on my mind other than trawling round Paddington station doing price comparisons. I don't agree it's not the shops fault. They're the ones exploiting customers by inflating their prices by over 100%.

My little local Turkish newsagent sells the same brand of chewing gum as WH Smiths and he charges 34p and he's certainly no rival to Tesco.

I do appreciate that point but still feel these outlets are making a huge profit out of the public.

That is my point - "these outlets" are not making "a huge profit" - the site owners are !
You are blaming the wrong people.

My daughter has managed a WH Smiths and you would be horrified if you saw the mark up on some of the items they sell - if that all went to WH Smith I can assure you they wouldn't bother mucking about running shops in the high street !

The prices are more than other WH smiths stores or supermarkets as the location is called a prime location so the rent for the spot is a hefty fee each month so the prices are going to be alot more than sa a tesco supermarket or a sainsburys. its pretty common place though, motorway services are the same with the burger kings at them sites. dont see teh vent though,

its not the stores who inflate the prices well it is but its only because the rent for the location is high so the prices go up,

At least now you know for the future.

WHsmiths isn't the only place that hikes its prices because its in a station.. Burger king are famous for it too (i do think its funny that there is another burger king within 200m of the one in the station that sells food at normal prices.. all you need to do is walk out the station exit and you see it)

the price tags are there. if u dont like it dont buy it.

buying it then complaining of the price afterwards just make u look like an idiot, and increases there profit in the process.
  • Retail businesses selling items at a profit shocker! Quick phone the Daily Mail.

WH smith may be charged a lot for having a store at the station but they wouldn't have a store there if they didn't make money out of it. My local train station based WHSmith charges 75p for a Twix and £1 for a can of coke (but £1.20 for a bottle??!). I have brought stuff there out of laziness before but avoid it because of the cost.
Ironically though one time I brought Daily Star for 25p. I handed over 50p and got £19.75 in change.
