Problem was that when Vista came along everyone was happy with XP.

Now the situation is somewhat reversed with everyone fed up with Vista. lol

I hated Vista and so far loving Windows 7 RC.

Had Vista pre-installed on a new dell laptop I bought and it was slower than my previous laptop despite the new one having more memory and a dual core processor. Installed XP and the new laptop flew. Using Windows 7 RC atm and its as quick as XP i reckon, but more polished looking and got some nice features like the new task bar. Totally stable even though its the RC. Will definately pre-order it when I get some spare cash.

I'd say that formatting your hard drive and ridding the machine of whatever Dell preinstalled was what gave you the performance boost, and not going back to XP because there difference between the two would be minute..

Windows7 is actually what XP was... a success,

Agree, XP is now very good.

I would say you are being a tad optimistic about W7 - MS said Vista was brilliant when they foisted it on us ! Give W7 about 7 years and I might agree then.

Whereas I wouldn't say I love it it's definately an improvement on Vista. It's install is smaller than Vista (at nearly 12GB Vista's was colossal.)

And ClearType actually works now. In Vista it was a horrible, blurry mess but 7's works very nicely, at least on my monitor. In fact it was so bad in Vista that even after it was turned off it still didn't look right I had to change the default font to Tahoma and/or Verdana to save my eyestrain. Plus theres a shutdown button enabled by default! Microsoft have been listening to consumers...!

7 is definately the OS Vista should have been.. It feels much leaner and crisper than Vista. I may upgrade to it from XP at some point especially when those nice shiny new DX11 cards become available.

if they get offended at the number 7 maybe...
Maybe OP is talking about Dogz - http://www.petz.ws/system/

Doesn't say it is compatible with Windows 7.

Dont think uninstalling MS Works or Acrobat reader is gonna make much difference tbh - its not like they installed Norton or something horrendous like that..

If you want to keep all your existing files and (some!) settings , have a look at the 'Windows Easy Transfer' wizard .. I've used this several times to transfer all sorts of things while re-installing.

Don't you need another laptop/system to store them on?
    It pays to challenge
