Barcelona

Hi all,

I've had a good search around on here and picked up a few hints and tips about Barcelona. I'm going there next week for a few days. I have got lots of sights planned that I would like to see (Parc Guell, Sagrada familia, Montjuïc, Ramblas, La Pedrera, Mies Van Der Rohe Pavillion - if I can find it, and a few other spots on route).

We're staying pretty much bang in the centre, so I am trying to figure out how to best plan our days. I was thinking one day sight seeing to the northern city points - parc guell / sagrada familia, the next day venturing south eastern towards the gothic parts / ramblas etc.

I'm wondering though if it's worthwhile getting a Barcelona travel card for skooting around? Once we've done the majority of the sight seeing (well what we want to see) we were thinking about the last day and a half of lazing around, down by the beach / marina and just chilling out in general.

I would like to see quite a lot of places and I'm wondering if it would be better to use the subway to get about or not?

Thanks in advance

It's definitely worth getting a travel card - ask at the tourist information office (it's on Placa de Catalunya).

The metro is pretty easy to use, but so are the buses. I prefer the buses as I don't like being underground much.

It depends on how many days you want to stay and how many journeys you plan. You can choose between the Barcelona card and T10 transport ticket. Please, read here: http://www.barcelona-tourist-guide.com/en/transport/transport-in-barcelona.html

    Enjoy your trip!

We found the open-top tourist buses in barcelona really useful and pretty decent value if you buy a 3 day ticket - there are three routes that cover just about every tourist sight in and around Barcelona. I prefer travelling on buses in a city I'm not familiar with as you get to see a lot more than you do in the subway!

Just got back from Barcelona. Just to let you know that if you purchase the T-10, each journey works out 77 cents (7.70 euros for 10 journeys) and the ticket can be used by more than one person. We just put the ticket thorugh the machine 4 times (for 2 adults and 2 children) and it wasn't a problem. Don't know if you're travelling with children but there are no discounts on the metro or buses for them unless they are very young (I think for 4 years and younger but you'd need to check). We found the metro very efficient and quick - no long waits for trains. Only problem we found was very long walks when changing between lines - it was really like walking to a different station in most cases.
  • The Park Guell is up a steep hill - we found the Barri Bus 161 took us right to the gate. Most tourist buses and ordinary buses drop you on the main road. The Barri Bus is a small bus - around minibus size but it saves you a long and hot walk up the hill! The Sagrada Familia is great from the outside and the museum underneath is great, wasn't that impressed with the inside - too much scaffolding around!

The amazing light show is free, starts 9pm ish for a truly amazing experience at Montjuic, on certain days we went on Sun did notice coachloads piling up on Fri.
T-10 was very useful as were the Tourist bus.
Do stroll down The Ramblas - visit La Baqoueria Market. There are other threads lok 'em up
Mind your pockets but enjoy,I've only been to Barcelona 4 times and will go again..Just back ...Enjoy!!
  • Thanks everyone!

Just me and my mate going - no kids. How hot is it out there at the moment? Is it a definite to wear shorts during the days? (not that I'm planning on wearing jeans - only during the evening when we're out and about). Where can I buy the T10 ticket from? That sounds great!! I had a look on the link someone else posted in this thread, but I could only find the Barcelona card - not teh T10.

I think we're planning on doing a bus tour one day. Then we can use the T10. There looks like there's just so much to see out there!! I hope I can get most of my plans in.

I've got a slim kind of bum bag wallet / that will strap round my waist - so hopefully keep muggers at bay, but I will be keeping an eye out at all times - can't decide whether to take my camera with me or not (as it's a good one, and difficult to disguise - Digital SLR).

  • ...also does anyone know if it's cheaper to exchange a bunch of euro's over here or withdraw them over in Barca?

We went in early September last year, and it was boiling - way too hot for me! My preferred times of year are spring or late autumn.

It's in the late 20s according to this site:

    Storms expected on Tuesday!

You can buy a T10 from any metro stop and from the Airport at the entrance to the RENFE train. Please note that the T10 (Zone 1 ) is valid for journeys in Barcelona City Centre Zone 1 on the metro, FGC and TMB buses, Tram and RENFE
