How to close ING account?

Hello folks,
I had a Kaupthing Edge account which was transfered
to ING Direct. Before it was transfered I had already
cleared the balance.
Actually, I never use my new ING account (but keep
getting letters from ING which is quite annoying).
Therefore I would like to close it. I haven't ever used
the online login details from ING. Though I have
the account details (i.e. ING Direct Customer number,
ING Direct Account number, ING Direct Sort code).
Can I simply close the account in writing to
ING Direct by providing the above information?
The problem is I can't find the online login details
they sent me. Looking at
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1886425
it seems to be a problem to give written instructions?!
Thank-you!

I never had the Kaupthing connection, but ING refused to close my account on a written instruction but were willing to do so verbally by telephone.0

I recently closed my ING account, just a simple letter requesting closure and transfer of any money left to my linked account with another bank.
All done smoothly.0 -

Well unless I have memory loss, I dont recall phoning them to close the account.0 -
I closed my account this week and as per their terms and conditions rang them on freephone 0800 376 8877. You will have to provide some security infomation such as date of birth and address but the whole process only took about 3 minutes.Regards

Be careful when talking to them. Behind the droids of customer sevices are some super sensitive computers which monitor telephone calls. My son tried to close his account the other day, forgot some of the "memorable" data and now has to produce passports, bank statements as they cancelled his online PIN and he now has no access to the account.
Never liked him having his money in Holland in the first place and now have to lend him money until they sort this out.....0 -

I find them difficult too. I opened an account with them for my husband who hates handling finances. The log in details were not being accepted so I wrote a letter for him to sign and they did nothing - no response. Then when I phoned to ask, in a general way, why they don't respond to letters they said it was not a postal account. I told him he would need to speak to them and wrote down everything I thought they were likely to ask. He got very agitated because they asked something else. I have decided not to open accounts for him in the future which means
he will get very low rates in a high street bank.
I had a Kaupthing bond which matured recently. ING sent a statement showing that they had deducted tax from my interest despite an R85 being supplied. Kaupthing must have had it as I have three of their statements clearly showing interest paid gross each time it was applied.
Now, I cannot get into my EGG account even though I have been dealing with them for some time. They say it will take two days or more to sort it out.0
