How has this happened? Wrong paypal account paid.

Hi guys.

Paypal back story: Many moons ago, I had a paypal account on Email 1. And many moons ago, I forgot the password and info to get back into it. Didn't need it at the time, so left it.
Starting selling things on eBay, and set up a new paypal account. Obviously, then struggled to set my bank account up because it was linked to another account. Many long phonecalls to Paypal and the resolution was because I couldn't prove account linked to Email 1 was mine, they couldn't release the bank details. So I set it all up on my second bank account, and Email 2.

Have since sold 40+ items with no trouble, all payments going into Email 2 paypal account, and Email 2 is the only paypal account linked to my eBay, according to my settings...
View and update your PayPal user preferences on eBay.
Your eBay account is linked with your PayPal account: <Email 2>@live.co.uk Remove link.
(Removing this link will make it more difficult to buy items from sellers who require confirmed PayPal accounts).

So, checking My Ebay today, I see I have an item paid for and no email notification. Very odd, I think. I check my paypal, and can't find a trace of that payment. Putting it to the back of my mind to chase up during business hours, I checked Email 1. Which has a payment for this item. Into Email 1 paypal account.

Now, the item has been paid for through eBay, so surely should have gone through to Email 2. The eBay account has NEVER been given email 1 for anything, let alone a paypal account.

It's quite a big payment, and while it's sat in Email 1 account I can't do anything with it.

Does anyone have any idea how this has happened, and is there any way I can get the money back? I'm very annoyed at this!!

I don't know if this is of any relevance, but I once had some dozy American buyer who for some reason typed in my PayPal address and got it wrong. Why she did not just press the PAY button on the invoice is beyond me.

I could not access the money at all as I did not know what address she had sent it to. I had to contact her to recall the money and start again.

As an aside, I must say I have had more trouble with American buyers than everyone else put together!

Check back on the item page to see if the payment email is your old (email1) address.

It doesn't give me an email? Just says paypal accepted?

You're right it doesen't say the payment email on the item page only on the item sold email. If you go to the item page and click sell similar item then scroll down to payment options there is a box under paypal with the payment email address. Check this and see if your old email has somehow slipped through.

You will have to contact ebay then as they have messed up. As far as the buyer is concerned they have paid so technically you should send the item. If you dont send the item the buyer will make a claim through paypal and get a refund from (hopefully) your old account. I cant explain how this could have happened, sorry.

We had a similar thing happen a while ago... except with the cards linked to Paypal. We changed bank accounts a while ago, so obviously got new cards and stuff, but we kept the old bank account open, and just added the new card to Paypal. We only use the new account to pay for stuff.

Paypal though, in one of their moments of madness that only make sense to them, decided that for one night all the payments we made would go from the other card, so we had £150 going out of the wrong account. We still don't know how it happened, we paid in the same way we always do, didn't change any settings... and it went back to the correct card the next day without us doing anything (good job, too. We didn't notice for a few days, and if nearly a grand had gone out of the wrong account, there could have been a lot of shouting between us, Paypal, and HSBC).

I do wonder if Paypal would have paid any charges we'd been hit with, had we gone overdrawn. With their blood-from-a-stone attitude, I doubt it
