Laminate Flooring or Tiles - Level floor?

Hi All
I'm hoping to put laminate wood or laminate tiles down in my kitchen.
Does the floor have to be dead level or would it allow for some lumps and bumps? - I can't afford for it to be levelled and obviously dont want to waste money on the laminate if its a no-go.
Hope someone can help.

it needs to be fairly level. the more uneven it is the worse the result.
you can always put down chipboard or plywood first if required.
i used hardboard on my kitchen floor before laying the floor tiles. its been ok for 3 yrs now.Get some gorm.0
