Hi, I am with Virgin Media but being a DFW I need to cut phone and broadband costs fast!!!. I've looked around and Virgin Media's £39.00 a month is going to have to go
.
I've hit on the following idea..
1. Get BT to install a BT phone line for free, as per current offer - saves about £122.00.
2. Get Talk Talk to provide phone service and broadband to this new BT line - saves £59.99 charged by Talk Talk for their line installation.
Talk Talk package: £17.74/month (TV on freeview enabled TV)
Virgin (on the rediculous) Media: £38.95
Savings per month: £21.21 :T
My query is... can I get BT to install a line and NOT take a telephone service from them but get Talk Talk to provide it but not let Talk Talk install the line?

Think again! BT will install the line for free but you will then be committed to an 18 month contract. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

Thanks expresso, I know I may have to enter into an 18month contract with BT but I would want that just to be just for line rental only..or do I have to take phone services from them as well to qualify for the free installation?

Line rental includes the telephone service - one or other of BT's calls plans (most people go for the free option, the Unlimited Weekend Plan).
OTOH, you will then have a line on which you can have ADSL broadband - and there are numerous providers.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
Although you can get BT to install the line for free ( if the offer is still available) you have an 18 month contract and have to make a certain number of chargable calls per billing period, broadband you have 100's of service providers to choose from but companys like Talk Talk and Sky may only offer you a cheap deal if you take telephony/line rental from then as well ( so breaking your BT contract and liable to the ££ penalty )
Lots of people seem to rate o2 and if you have a o2 mobile then they can be pretty cheap0 -

Won't work as under the free installation deal you also need to make 10 calls a month through BT, otherwise I think they can charge you for the installation they gave free at the beginning.0 -
Thanks to everyone for the replies. I may just go for Talk Talk's deal and pay the £59.99 line installation fee as their package is free for three months and then quite cheap from then on.DFW'er - Lightbulb moment : 31st July 2009 - £18,499

Just a small point - when you install a line with Talktalk on their 59.99 deal they'll want you to start a 24 month contract with a possible 70 pound cancellation fee - just something to add to the mix0

You might find that Virgin give you a good deal to stay with them if you speak to them.0
