Hi guys i'm back. Just done the speed tests again and they are still showing between 1700-1900kbps which is what i was getting on the 2mb connection, except the InternetFrog one which seems to give me very low readings, 460 down/48 up  something not right there lol

I will keep testing over the next few days and see if there is any improvement. Dont really want to have to buy a router when my current modem should do the job.

Also not sure if i've got ethernet, got a network card, is that the same thing?
    Errrr...come back later ;)

I'm not disputing the reality of the BT advice that you're passing on, it just that it appears to be technically incongruous. I may stand to be corrected on this but I can't think of any reason why even a USB 1.1 modem should restrict an ADSLMax connection providing the drivers/firmware are up-to-date.

For example the BT link suggests using wireless in preference to USB. They haven't qualified this advice by recommending 802.11g so if you had an 802.11b wireless connection it would be 1Mbps slower than even a USB 1.1 connection.

Personally I always recommend using a router for broadband anyway but primarily for security reasons (NAT/Firewall/SPI) rather than performance.

Maybe BT are using it as a sales pitch so they can sell lots of their overpriced routers? :grouphug:

I don't use a BT router and to be honest when I have used a usb connection I can't say I've noticed any difference to LAN or WLAN. But hey, you might just try it in case ??

By the way I'm not a fan of BT routers in case you couldn't tell. But routers generally will be faster than an ADSL modem (I know, according to BT).
