Unfortunately the laptop battery probably needs replacing - 18 months is about the most you can expect from many of them if the laptop is used a lot.

I doubt it's the BIOS battery - you probably wouldn't be asked to calibrate a BIOS battery, as they are usually not rechargeable.

If it is the BIOS battery, the computer date & time will be inaccurate after being shutdown & disconnected from the charging lead. So my advice would be to
    • check the date & time are correct & set them accordingly
    • shutdown the laptop
    • disconnect it form the mains etc
    • wait 20-30 minutes
    • reconnect it
    • turn it back on.
If the date & time are still correct, the the BIOS battery is probably OK and the issue is with the main battery pack which will need repacing, otherwise, replace the BIOS battery

  • The message is nothing at all to do with the BIOS battery.

It refers to the laptops ability to 'learn' the charge level and discharge rate of the battery so it can provide an accuarate tool bar indication of battery % remaining. The message is because the laptop is 'seeing' unexpected charge/discharge values and is a very good indicator that the battery is due for replacement.

There is some nice shareware here that you can use to compare the old battery with the new one:

In that case, the battery pack is probably on its way out.
